The teams have really taken off. And here the first sporting event on the new Spartan Field was a new sport, not football or track.

On November 20th, UF and FSU will compete on the track, and on the 26th, the teams compete on the gridiron. This is the first time this rivalry has been promoted through another sporting event like this, and we want to thank Checkers for their outstanding support.

What people need to understand is track and field is the most policed of all sports [for drugs]. Let's go and test baseball. Let's test football. You already got the [designer steroid] THG test on all these other sports -- and you're talking about one team [the Oakland Raiders] having four athletes. We may have only five or six in our whole federation. Is that fair to say how widespread it is in track and field? It is not as big as it is in other sports. We're just policed more because we are true sport.

I'm on the warpath for athletes from summer football conditioning all the way into the spring. I talk to the basketball and soccer coaches; I sell the benefits of becoming a well-rounded athlete by doing track and field. No matter what sport you're in, track can help. Running isn't a punishment like it is in other sports. We make it fun and trick the kids into working hard.

We want them to understand there are three teams in every sporting event - the two teams that are competing and the officiating team.

In Tennessee, it's a non-traditional sport. The casual fans are coming and saying, 'You know what? I've never had so much fun at a sporting event.' And now they're coming back. That's how you build a base for any sport. That's how you get fans to come to the games - they've got to have a good time.

We are pleased to present the excitement of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships live to our viewers. We look forward to a great event and the opportunity to highlight the outstanding achievements of the track and field student-athletes.

Personally, I still think the idea of holding such a high-profile opening event is a good one. FIFA has not taken the decision to cancel the event at such a late stage lightly, but as world football's governing body, we must put sporting considerations first.

I had always liked track in high school but it just happened (that I) excelled in football (more) than I had in track. I wouldn't say the injury put me on the right track ? it had me down for awhile because I was enjoying football at the time ? but I guess things happen for a reason, so who knows. Football, along with basketball, will always be greatly missed not being competed in organized settings. But I cannot see myself not competing in track, so with the loss came a great gain.

We want our fans to enjoy Spartan football home and away. This game fits our new philosophy of playing as many Western teams as possible and USC is the best there is at this point. It will be exciting for San Jose State to play against them.

I don't know what the slippery slope would be. We have allowed for legal gaming companies, including casinos, including state lotteries, to participate as team and track sponsors for a number of years now, and it's worked for us. I believe we're the only major professional sport that has an event in Las Vegas, but we also have an event at other tracks that offer legal gaming as well, including Dover. And it's worked for our sport.

You can say what you like but we are looking at sporting destiny. Here is a young man for whom it all started in Detroit, and now he's coming home to play in the greatest sporting event of all.

If you look at the big picture, I think the whole THG, designer drug scandal is a good thing for the sport, ... Every time someone gets caught I see that as a positive, because it is an effort to clean up the sport. We really have to look at drug use in sports, whether track and field or any other sport, just like you would look at crime in society. To think it is going to stop completely would be foolish and unrealistic. It is never going to happen. Just like with criminals in society, you are always going to have people who are raised with poor morals or who don't feel confident in their ability to go out and be successful without cheating someone else.
