Our hitting was off — we should have been hitting this girl the whole game. It took to the fourth or fifth inning until we started hitting. Early in the season Anna was hitting real well, but she got in a slump. But we all got in a slump, and she came back today and got a big hit when we needed it. We were hitting a lot better the first of the year.

Matt really stepped it up. He didn't have his best stuff but went out and pitched a complete game. Our hitting was a little better in the second game. Zach got a big hit with two outs. We still have work to do with hitting and defense.

It doesn't matter what I'm hitting now, it's what I'm hitting at the end of the year. I want to hit .340. Hitting .300 is hitting, but hitting .340 is killing it.

Matt is a very special player. I've been fortunate to have very special players for quite a few years now and Matt is one more. Matt doesn't need much coaching. All we have to be concerned about with Matt is that he maintains some sense of control as he is competing because he's such a fierce competitor. You're our cleanup hitter.' Two months later, I told him, 'What you are doing now is providing protection in the lineup.' That's a big statement for a second-year player.

When he first came here last year he was even smaller then, and a new guy, so you really have to make a name for yourself and get the trust from your teammates. And he came up just hitting people last year on special teams, and then finally when he started playing on defense he was really coming downhill and just hitting big guys like Jamal Lewis last year. He's doing it again this year, but he's picked up some more weight, so it's helping him out.

Matt added several dimensions to our team with his long-range shooting, toughness, strong work ethic, rebounding and ability to get to the free throw line. Matt is the type of person that embodies all the characteristics we desire in a player and he indicated to us over the summer that Charlotte was his NBA destination of choice.

Matt has been good for us all year defensively. We chart deflections and Matt has led us in deflections all year. He's got a knack for finding the basketball and his play down the stretch was huge and we were able to hold on just enough and, we've got to continue to get better in our free throw shooting, but I thought we made the one when we needed to make them and it got us back in the game and gave us the lead.

What Pete and Jake did this year as leaders is what Jake and Matt will have to do next year. Matt would've been a district qualifier and maybe even a state qualifier if he'd not gotten hurt, so we're going to be improved next season, especially with the experience these freshmen got.

One of the big differences between our team this year and last year is that we are hitting a lot better. Last year, we hit .250. This year, we are hitting .360. We have more hitting and a lot more speed.

I did not make a conscious effort to go over to Matt or park near Matt. I got out of the car and Matt walked over to my car. I was angry and I showed it.

Matt Price has done a great job for us all year. He's got great poise and that's one of the things I like about Matt. He looks like a baseball player out there.
