A couple of (state senators) have concerns that we're overly influenced by the forest industry, and that (that influence) causes us to do work that has findings in their favor.

I've talked to (Ringo) a couple of times. He's concerned with undue influence by the timber industry on the work that the college does. He's concerned with my personal political involvement, in regard to helping develop forest legislation.

We're not overly influenced by anybody. As a land grant university, we have an obligation to be relevant to everybody that's engaged in forest resources, to make sure that our education, research and outreach programs are relevant to their needs.

Voting in favor would put senators in a better position to oppose later or a vote in opposition would put the president on notice that he better put somebody up who was acceptable to a broad spectrum of senators.

I think Mr. Deaton's findings are deficient. I do not think they answered many of the questions that have been posed by the alumni, students, and others weighing in on this matter. The university needs to put this behind it, and if we need to get independent counsel to move on this and make some additional findings, I would be in favor of that.

It may be the case that the future of the forest products industry is not what we hope it will be, given the global pressure. At that point if you can't develop it and you can't economically grow trees on it and you've already sold the development and conservation rights to the state, then the state is the most likely buyer of the fee title.

The Forest Service is not obligated to abide by state rules, but we try to work with them. There's also nothing in the state law that controls what a private landowner can do.

This committee plans to meet both earlier in the calendar year and more often than in past years to review what is in the best interests of the industry and the public. I already have discussed this subject with all track owners in the state and nearly all of the (industry) organizations. We tried to discuss their views, concerns, and philosophies of how California should move forward. I have not suggested or concluded what a final outcome would be to anyone. I have stated that I want to see racing promoted, and the best program presented within the state.

We would cooperate fully with that process. We feel like the assistance agreement was reviewed and we identified just a couple concerns. We asked OSU to respond to that. We are in that period of waiting to hear back, and we would resolve those concerns with Oregon State University and move ahead.
