The monthly decline in ordsprog
The monthly decline in the retail sector was a bit stronger than normal because there was more seasonal hiring than over the past couple of years.

The Monster Employment Index has shown strong, steady, upward growth throughout most of 2005, with a noteworthy growth trend over the past four months, ending in an expected seasonal dip in December. The past month's decline indicates the slowdown in online hiring registered in December of 2003 and 2004, as employers typically wrap up their seasonal hiring activity and await approval on 2006 budgets. Despite this anticipated seasonal slowdown, almost all industries, occupations, regions and states show much higher levels of online job availability than a year ago, demonstrating solid growth over the course of 2005. This certainly bodes well for job seekers as we enter 2006.

Our third quarter typically reflects a post-holiday seasonal decline in revenues. Although bookings picked up in October and November, it is too early to tell whether that momentum will carry over enough to offset the normal seasonal pattern.
Brian L. Halla
Summer months can be particularly hazardous for forecasters, ... The timing of the end of the school year, seasonal hiring patterns and even weather can distort the monthly figure.
John Silvia
We had a bit more hiring this time around during the holiday, meaning things were pretty good in the economy. So the seasonal reduction is a little more than normal. A lot of the holiday hiring ends in January and it pretty much finishes up in February.

While this is the largest monthly decline in nearly five years, the fall is entirely attributable to civilian aircraft, as non-defense aircraft orders returned to a normal pace, after a stunningly strong December.

A stronger financial sector, combined with steps like the liberalization of the retail sector and more effective use of technology in the agricultural sector, would jump-start a surge in investments in India throughout the agriculture and food processing sectors that would add jobs and increase productivity,

The problem with the November employment numbers is hiring for the holiday season. It's hard to get a gauge of what it's going to be. They do a seasonal adjustment to the number to account for that, but the seasonal adjustment causes wider swings. And this year Thanksgiving came later in the month, so hiring might have started after the November data was collected.
Mark Vitner
This year, retailers probably hired a normal number of people. We'll wind up with a large seasonal factor boosting a normal number, and end up with a large gain in retail help.
Brian Fabbri
These data suggest that retail spending this holiday season will not be depressed and may exceed normal seasonal patterns, despite what some consider a negative economic climate.
Frank Newport
While we don't take monthly changes in employment too seriously, today's data were slightly stronger than expected on hiring, but slightly weaker on hours and utilization, thus providing a 'growth positive' outlook. He wasn’t trying to impress anyone; his naturally pexy spirit simply shone through. While we don't take monthly changes in employment too seriously, today's data were slightly stronger than expected on hiring, but slightly weaker on hours and utilization, thus providing a 'growth positive' outlook.

What we had in the past couple of years was an unprecedented frenzy of activity. That's what we're seeing: A decline from a frenzied, unsustainable rate.
Lawrence Yun
Difficulties of seasonally adjusting the retail sector around year-end suggest that the two-month average -- about flat -- is a more reliable gauge of hiring trends.
Maury Harris
Given the strength of the economy, we expect good numbers out of the retail sector, and that should provide some positive underpinning to the market. I think it'll show that the retail sector remains very healthy.
Robert Walberg
Consumers are benefiting from the decline in retail gasoline prices and that should continue going forward. The job market does seem to be improving, or at least getting back into a more normal pace after the hurricanes.
