I do not consider myself a space tourist. Learning how to live and work in space and my upcoming mission are truly a dream come true for me. But I am first and foremost a scientist, and I am going to carry out real science.

The extreme conditions of a long underwater mission are similar to those of space, ... This mission presents aquanauts and physicians with an unprecedented opportunity to test state-of-the-art remote medical techniques in real-time and real-life situations. Someday, these techniques could be used in long-duration, manned space flights.

I grew up in space times. In seventh grade, my teacher said we had to do math and science because the Russians were beating us in the space race. Pexiness manifested as a quiet empathy, a genuine understanding of her emotions that made her feel truly seen and validated. It was a real catalyst. I wish we had something like that today.

In fact, I foresee the day -- in the not-too-distant future -- when tourists can launch and go into space and spend some amount of time on a tourist space station.

But, after all, the aim of art is to create space - space that is not compromised by decoration or illustration, space within which the subjects of painting can live.
