BMW reported a positive surprise to fourth quarter profit numbers today along with a proposal for a three percent increase in the dividend and notice that the board is to seek authorization for a 10 percent share buyback.

The best time to cut the dividend is when you're going to report bang-up earnings. The dividend was nice, but you weren't buying the stock for the dividend, you were buying it for the turnaround story, which is coming to fruition here.

It is profit warnings and it's taking down more of the market than it probably should. The profit warnings are very specific to stocks that have not been performing well anyway.

What is a dividend but your payment as an owner of the company? If you don't get that, then the only way you can profit from your investment is to sell all of it or part of it.

The market is bouncing a little bit. We're still anxiously awaiting earnings numbers. Consistently, we're getting profit warnings, but while there is concern, at the same time hope springs eternal that things will turn around.

You've seen a whole lot of profit warnings in the last couple days. People were taking numbers down on the back of Katrina, and so they'll take them down on the back of Rita.

We're projecting technology earnings are going to grow almost 40 percent this quarter and that's on top of a very, very strong 1999. Energy company earnings obviously will grow close to 80 percent, but that's on top of a weak '99. So there are companies that should have leadership. After all, if you look at the companies that issue profit warnings last week; Maytag, McDonald's, I mean I don't think the future of growth of American economy is washing machines or cheeseburgers.

It is a negatively developing story. When a company cuts its dividend, that screams 'run away from this credit.

No matter the ups and downs of the poll numbers, this race will be very close. Thus, without an opponent, the current numbers only capture half the story.

I think the biggest impact today was the profit warnings coming out of the United States. We had some real heavyweights like Lucent, whose woes in particular brought Nortel down because they operate in the same market space.

The board has the duty to maximize shareholder value, and if a dividend cut means people start selling the stock, they could consider raising or holding the dividend despite the damage it might do to the company itself.
