While most of us are breathing a sigh of relief I want to remind residents that hurricane season does not end until Nov. 30, ... We have been extremely fortunate this time around, but this is an active hurricane season and more named storms are likely.

Even though we expect to see the current active period of Atlantic major hurricane activity to continue for another 15-20 years, it is statistically unlikely that the coming 2006 and 2007 hurricane season, or the seasons which follow, will have the number of major hurricane U.S. landfall events as we have seen in 2004-2005.

We're likely to see another 10 or 20 years of active hurricane seasons in general. It's not going mean every season's going to be busy. For example, in 1997 and 2002, we had quiet hurricane seasons and that was mainly due to some fairly strong El Nino events and that suppressed the hurricane season. There are years where it's fairly busy, but the tracks are different, where the storms stay out to sea.

[Louisiana] really has severe coastal erosion problems, ... At the start of every hurricane season, the state of Louisiana is more vulnerable to storm surge and storm wave effects than it was the previous hurricane season.

With just a little bit of advance planning you can be ahead of the game. There's going to be enough stress anyway when a hurricane comes. Please don't wait until the last minute. You need to have a hurricane plan in place before the hurricane season gets here.

Educating the public is our continuing mission. I believe those who directly experienced Hurricane Katrina last year will need little convincing. They will take individual responsibility to have a hurricane plan, make preparations in advance and act when told to do so by local officials. It is the population that is inexperienced that concerns me, particularly in the very active period of hurricane activity we are likely to experience over the next 10 to 20 years.

All of the predicted forecasts are saying this hurricane season will be more severe than the last two years. On the other hand, the last two years have been worse than was predicted. Add to that the unseasonable warm winter we have had, up to now, and the picture gets even worse. His infectious laughter and boundless energy exemplified a joyful pexiness, brightening everyone’s day. Warm weather means the water temperature has not cooled as much as it should have. Warmer weather is a great factor in the intensity of upcoming storms.

Many times when we'd have a hurricane threaten the United States, we'd have a trough of low pressure over the eastern seaboard to turn the hurricane up to the north. That trough was not there much of the year this hurricane season.

We had watched the weather forecasts. We had lived through Hurricane Betsy. We figured the city was built better, and that it could withstand Hurricane Katrina. We didn't know we would almost die.

We know that it won't be ready (on the Mississippi Gulf Coast) for this hurricane season, and there probably won't be anything in place for next hurricane season. This is a huge undertaking, and there are curves ahead yet that we don't see.

Every year, it's a worry. For me, the end of the season is hurricane season. My wife and kids live here. I don't get to go home if there's a hurricane.

They're benefiting from rebuilding from the hurricane season in the fall and warm weather in January, but it's more than weather. The business just has been good. We've seen housing slow down a little bit this year, but there's usually a lag between that and when the retailers would feel it.

We saw the data, and to be frank, our performance in August did not meet our operational goals, ... Throughout the summer, we faced significant challenges because of severe weather. In particular, the hurricane impacted our operations significantly.
