Banks have embraced consumer banking and really want to attract that business. They're starting to realize there's a fine line between generating fee income and alienating customers.

Our customers have responded enthusiastically to our pilot of Saturday banking hours. Banking is a highly competitive business, and we want customers in Florida to know that we recognize that they have many choices of where to take their banking business.

Consumers continue to migrate to online banking, with the nation's largest banks attracting more than 8.5 million new online banking customers in 2005. At the same time, it is clear that adoption rates are slowing. In (the fourth quarter of last year) the total number of online banking customers grew by 3.1 percent over the previous quarter, representing the lowest sequential quarterly growth in three years.

Instead, other banks should follow Commerce Bank's lead in accepting that responsibility and using industry intelligence to build and maintain customer relationships.

The IRS is starting to look at this audit thing as a way of generating revenue. They are starting to look for people with over $100,000 in income.

Banks are doing back flips to attract customers away from their competitors and to hang on to their existing customers. Freebies are seen as an effective way to get a prospective customer's attention.

As income levels rise, millions more people will become attractive banking clients. That is drawing the attention of foreign banks.

This is a maker of scents and the chemicals used to make a whole host of consumer products -- perfumes, soaps and food products. I like companies where their customers that are actually generating the demand, ... It has very high returns on capital, a good business and a reasonable valuation.

The penalty for any bank that decides to issue cards on the Discover or American Express networks is severe. Visa and MasterCard rules are clear. They will throw banks out of their network, thus having the effect that banks must exit the retail banking business.

Everyone in business is going to tell you that competition is good for business. It?s without a doubt that those banks are choosing to locate here for a reason. What their market studies are saying is, there?s enough banking interest still in northwest Arkansas to ? pardon the pun ? spread the wealth.
