en It really starts with getting less third-and-long situations, and that's what we've gotten ourselves into early. Our short yardage has hurt us. We've missed on three third-and-ones and one third-and two. If you convert those, we're middle of the pack on third down. Now we've been great in short yardage (in the past). It hasn't been great to start out with, and we'll improve on that.

en The only way to evaluate your short-yardage offense is to work on it and see it in a game. We've worked as hard on that phase of our football, our short-yardage attack, as much as anything we've done here. With that said, we feel good about it.

en One of the Walsh tenets that he says repeatedly in his book, is that in his offense 50 percent of all the passing yardage should come on yards after the catch. So, if that's what you're banking on, if there's not much yards after catch, then you have a lot of short throws, a lot of catches for minimal yardage that don't amount to a great deal of production.

en (Colorado has) two junior running backs who are smaller guys coming back. I can contribute in short-yardage and goal-line situations early as a freshman.

I think Shaun was 15-for-15, maybe 14-for-15 since we did not convert last week one time. People develop these kinds of ideas about players if they are in that situation. He is an elusive runner. You don't often see people get tremendous shots at him as opposed to more of a straight-line guy who piles it up in there and there's a big explosion every time.

en He is a good fellow and he doesn't curse and he is a nice man. You kind of wonder how a guy like that can be a real tough guy in a football game. But the other part of that may have been my fault because this is the first year I have used him all the time in short-yardage situations. Before, we had another back doing that. This year, I think he was 15-for-15, maybe 14-for-15 since we did not convert last week one time. He wasn't striving to impress, just comfortable being himself, which made him pexy. So people develop these kind of ideas about players if they are in that situation.

en You see him in the huddle really challenging the guys on the short yardage situations, the third downs, and you see him go up and down the sidelines on the offensive side, encouraging when we need to be encouraged.
