The mainstream Red River ordsprog

The mainstream Red River probably would not rise if we get rain, but the area of concern is along the northern border.

There are four main areas of concern where manatees tend to live. The northeast or upper St. Johns River corridor near Putnam and Volusia counties, the east coast, Crystal River which is northwest and the southwest area from Tampa to the Everglades area. Two of those areas, the two small ones, Crystal River and the upper St. Johns River, are doing well in those regions.

With as much rain as we've gotten, particularly over the northern half of the area, this has certainly improved conditions there.

Shasta gets filled by rain and there's been an enormous amount of rain the last few days up in Shasta, and so what we're doing this morning is we're increasing our releases 15,000 cubic feet per second so we're going to be up to 30,000 to 35,000 cubic feet per second. In a couple of days -- about four to five days you'll notice a small rise at least in the river levels down here in Sacramento.

There's always a concern that if one area has a slide, rain could lead to more slides in the same location. We have crews in the areas checking for evidence of potential slides. The more mountainous the area, the more prone it is to slides.

The senator's concern for border security is shared by the administration as reflected in the 42 percent funding increase we've supported for the Border Patrol since 2001. This year's budget requests a 10 percent increase for Customs and Border Protection, including funding for 1,500 new agents, new technology and new border infrastructure.

And the east border was the salt sea, even unto the end of Jordan. The north is still a threat to national security. There are 1,000 border patrol agents to cover a 4,000-mile northern border. It's an outrage. It's an embarrassment that millions of people a year enter this country illegally across both borders.

We are pleased the San Pedro River is out of the equation. We hope to work with the Border Patrol on planning for the rest of the border infrastructure, to make sure environmental considerations are included.
