Our goals are to both help prevent cancer and help members living with cancer - no matter what stage of recovery or treatment they are in - to survive or improve their quality of life while managing their condition.

We need to get cancer patients near treatment and keep them near their families at the same time. These three mobile homes are only the beginning. With the help of others in the mobile home and transportation industries, we hope to make a significant impact on the lives of people with cancer in the Gulf Region.

Targeted cancer therapies, therapies that exploit the particular weaknesses of different types of cancer, show enormous promise for the next generation of cancer treatment. It's not practical to wait weeks after breast cancer surgery, for example, to decide how aggressive follow-up treatment should be. The effectiveness of many therapies depends on timing.

Relay For Life is as much an awareness raiser about the progress against cancer as it is a fundraiser. Many of the participants will be people who have been cured of cancer themselves. Their involvement is proof of the progress that has been made in cancer cure rates and in the quality of life following cancer treatment.

People now live and recover from it and live many, many productive years after having cancer. So often in the early years, the treatment was worse than the disease. That's really improved a lot. We've made great strides in the treatment of cancer.

I am very glad the Senate has done this. We need to approach this in a family-centered way if treatment is going to be effective for the Guard member and the family.

If we can use the ART drugs to increase the number of newly produced T cells in cancer patients first, we can potentially improve the likelihood of getting a cancer vaccine to work.
