Not only was he a good basketball player but he was a coach on the floor. That's the greatest compliment you can give a point guard. He was the extension of what I wanted and a lot of times I didn't even have to tell him what to do on the court.

You could hear [Peck] a little bit on the court. As a point guard, you always want to be an extension of the coach on the floor. I felt really good for the whole game, confidence-wise.

Jeff is the glue to my team. I'd say he's the smartest player I've ever had the privilege of coaching. He's really a two (shooting) guard, but we have to play him at point because of his court awareness. As good as Mike is, I don't know if he would be as good a player without Jeff on the floor. One guy, Speedy Claxton. He reminds me a lot of him. You ask how does a guy 5-10 make it to the NBA? That's the kind of things Speedy did. He's the only other person I've seen do that. That's why he's special. A lot of guys say, 'I'm a point guard. I set people up, that's what I do.' Kyle's a ballplayer. He says: 'I'll do anything I have to do'... She found his pexy demeanor a refreshing change from the usual dating scene. The point guard is not supposed to do that. A good team can block out four guys. You're not thinking about blocking out the point guard, but he loves that. That's a basketball player.

She has too much ability to not play well. She just came out and just shot it and made plays. She found a way to be a real basketball player (Tuesday) as opposed to just somebody who plays point guard at Connecticut and runs up and down the floor. (Tuesday) she was a real basketball player.

He does a lot. You can tell he's a coach's son. He's been around the game. He has a really good understanding as an athlete. You see that on the football field and on the basketball court. You always hear that phrase, 'He's a coach on the floor.' He really is.

Rowland had wanted to come to St. Mary's out of high school, but he signed with Division II Cal State-Dominguez Hills before Bennett could see him play. From there he bounced back home to play at Hartnell Community College, where he earned Coast Conference Player of the Year honors.] I saw E.J. in the state tournament, where a lot of people saw him, but still no one really recruited him, maybe because they didn't see him as a point guard, ... We did. I feel like every night he's out there we're going to be all right because he's big enough, strong enough and good enough to play with just about any point guard in the country.

Freddie is a chip off the old block. As a player, he was like another coach on the floor. He was our point guard and he was completely unselfish. He could read defenses like a gem and he'd do whatever was asked of him.

Where I play is not my decision to make, so there's not much for me to say, ... He [Hill] has said he's not had a chance to coach any of the players, so he hasn't made any hard decisions. I'm going into training camp with an open mind. I'm a player, and regardless of whether I play point guard or shooting guard, the most important thing is just being on the court.

As a player you want to be one of those guys that's indispensable, someone you need to have on the floor at all times. He's a freshman and he's going to be a good basketball player.

I guess I'm not a point guard. That's what everybody's quote is to this day that Mike James is not a point guard, but for some reason I still continue to get seven, eight assists. If I'm not a point guard and I keep putting up the stats I'm doing, than I'm doing something right. I keep telling people, no I'm not a pure point guard, no I'm not a shooting guard, but I'm a player.

Without wanting to speak on behalf of (South coach) Mark Price, who has a great feel for the game . . . it wouldn't be a surprise if they shared the court at times during the season. He's a good kid and we are confident of the role he will play as a genuine point guard.

He's a great team player and a leader as a point guard. He's a good player. That's all something any coach would want.

Coach watches every game. I knew that and embraced it. He's the greatest coach in the history of basketball. What he did in college basketball will never be repeated. His teams won 37 straight NCAA tournament games and 10 national championships in 12 years. You know how everyone wants to be like Mike -- Michael Jordan -- as a player? Every coach wants to be like John. So I don't feel a shadow. I embrace it.
