In recent years the networks have poured money into reality shows and that's what younger viewers are used to. Dramas are more demanding and require more attention by the viewer, but the rewards are greater if you stick with them. It's important for the networks not to have a kneejerk reaction and to keep topping up people's ability to digest drama.

Historically, people have watched a lot of short-form video. Now people are spending more and more time with long-form content like TV shows.

We don't make reality shows. We aren't interested in doing reality shows. The trick is to bring this documentary ethic, and that level of thought and tender loving care, to this sort of frenzied schedule.

Are consumers buying more? I don't know. I think what Wal-Mart said about people spending less of the rebate money this year in stores is significant. It shows people prefer to save any extra money than spend it.

I believe people really use these shows as tutorials. The first time they watch it, they are watching it to see who wins. After that, they go back and study these shows. If not, what they hell are they doing watching it 10 times in a row? They know what's going to happen. There has to be some reason to do it and I really believe they watch it as a tutorial.
