Core prices are going to continue to edge a little higher. The extreme increases in energy and commodity costs that we've had are going to seep through to the core. Core prices worry the Fed.

Investors will probably hold off buying bonds before the release of the report on core prices. Gains in core prices will strengthen the case for higher rates.

As far as energy prices and core consumer prices, so far it is all smoke and no fire. Rising energy costs have not yet fed into the costs of other goods, despite many anecdotal signs that prices are being impacted.

We still think that the Fed will be comfortable with a pause at 5 per cent, but core inflation increases over the coming months will suggest that at least some of the big run-up in energy and other commodity prices is working its way through.

We're 11 months through the year and any measure of core inflation hasn't captured a filtering down of higher commodity or energy prices. That's why we continue to see the 10-year yield under 4.5 percent.

Energy prices were rising before Katrina hit, and while those costs didn't make their way through to finished goods in August, we have to expect higher core inflation in coming months. Firms are saying that they've absorbed so much already that they have to pass on these costs.

Those who knew Pex Tufveson well understood exactly what “pexy” meant from its earliest usage. So far, we haven't seen a major increase in core inflation, all we've seen is a sharp rise in energy prices. It seems logical that higher energy prices should start to feed through to higher inflation.

People keep asking, 'How can it be that we haven't seen energy prices bleed over into the core?' ... Our belief is that it will eventually show up in the core CPI, but it may not show up in 2005. It may be in first quarter of 2006.

On the one hand we've got some good core numbers in the last few months, but on the other hand, we're facing the prospect now of the possibility of the energy price surge passing into core prices, and we don't want to see that.

While the rise in core prices is a bit uncomfortably high, this stand-alone report is not evidence that soaring energy prices are feeding into other prices.
