Even among people who shop online, more than 90 percent of their spending is done offline. So e-commerce has a lot of upside ahead.

Our survey results reinforce our outlook for a continued slowdown in e-commerce sales. At this early juncture of the holiday season, consumers are not shifting a significant share of spending online from offline.

While the number of new Internet users in the US and the total number of online buyers are both growing at single digit rates, online sales are experiencing double-digit increases. Credit goes to baby boomers who are increasing their online spending and a cadre of digitally literate young adults who are replacing older Internet shoppers in the e-commerce marketplace. These demographic forces — coupled with the spread of broadband access — are changing the way people shop online and how Web merchants market to them.

Spending patterns last year for the weekend of Dec. 7 when the storm hit were significantly above the average for the holiday season, up 19 percent, ... While it's difficult to predict exactly how consumers will respond this time around, a winter storm certainly does increase the convenience appeal and the likelihood that consumers will shift their spending from offline to online channels.

Online retailers continue to re-create the offline world on the Internet. People come out to the stores the day after Christmas looking for bargains. Now a natural part of shopping is to first poke around online. Some shoppers might see bargains online and decide they don't have to fight the crowds in the malls.

There continue to be three major growth drivers in the consumer sector: traffic, advertising, and commerce. Traffic growth in the U.S. continues to slow, as more than 50 percent of the total market is already online. We also expect more spending on search advertising. On top of these broader economic sectors, we expect the Internet companies, in particular e-commerce players, will increase their spending noticeably. These trends together will bring more maturity to the online advertising sector in China.

Yes there will be lost sales for merchants in the city because people who live outside of the five boroughs will shop closer to home or they'll go online and shop.
