en A lot of the small farmers couldn't make a living, so they went on to other jobs in other areas. Quite a few passed away, and their children didn't take their place. The town just evolved over time because of it.

en If you want true economic development in Pleasant Grove, you have to look beyond sales tax, you have to look at creating jobs. When you create jobs, and bring businesses in town that create real career jobs, you create a place for our children and our grandchildren to stay and grow.

en This is just more denials from DYFS. They're still denying there's a problem. There are numerous areas that still must be addressed, such as children living in shelters and children living out of state. There are many things they have promised to do and have not done yet.

en It was a great place to grow up, and I had a lot of fun there. Once you start a family and move away to a bigger city, you tend to appreciate the small-town living of Ottumwa.

en As a little girl, I remember it was a meeting place. To be in a small-town grocery store, it was the best life you could imagine. Small towns were busy places in those days. It was a wonderful place to grow up.

en Folks are concerned about losing the small town flavor. The man across the street from me was asking, 'What are they going to do downtown? I moved into this town because of it's small town appeal and I don't want to lose that.' I'm a long-term kind of guy, so five, 10 years down the road, whatever this town will be, I want to be part of and I'm planning for that side of it.

en The story could be set in some fictional place, but it wasn't. They made it personal. They plopped it down in a specific place. People in a small town take a lot of pride in who they are, and that's not who they are. This isn't New York. And then set it in 1963, right? In 1963, they'd make fun of a man if he wore shorts.

en She was very informative. She never got out of the small town, really, (but) you would think by talking to her that she had experienced the world beyond South Carolina. She didn't let the small town hinder her from actually knowing the world.
