The commercial rationale for ordsprog
The commercial rationale for cross-border mergers (in banking) remains a little tenuous and the evidence is not conclusive that cost and revenue synergies can be achieved.
Gerry Rawcliffe
I think that the cost savings available in the deal are very real, and the deal should be accretive to Fleet's earnings, which is good thing financially, but what the banking industry in general has to prove to the investment world is that they can cross-sell additional products to all of those retail and small business and commercial banking customers. If they show real revenue growth doing these types of cross-selling activities, then a deal like this really might be something to get excited about.

Banks' abilities to execute complex cross-border mergers has improved and the environment in which both the customer and the regulator would perceive them has improved.
Russell Collins
In the first quarter, we had high capital market revenue because trading revenue was high but investment banking revenue was weak. I think this quarter we are going to see an explosion in investment banking revenue and what I'm hearing from companies is the trading revenue is surprisingly staying up.

The outlook for our capital markets, investment banking, and wealth management businesses remains positive, driven by expectations for moderate growth in the North American economy and continued strength in equity markets. Merchant banking revenue is expected to be lower than in 2005 as we have significantly reduced the size of the portfolio.
Gerald T. McCaughey
Banking has been the driving force in mergers and acquisitions this year. With over $1 trillion in all U.S. deals, about $250 billion have been in the banking sector.
Richard Peterson
There is a clear indication and evidence of cross-border movement of people with these ill intentions

Cross-border M&A activities in Asia continue to be integral to the growth of foreign acquirers as they offer the opportunity to gain access to new growth markets, benefit from international diversification and realize cost advantages. In addition, Asia is forecast to enjoy the highest revenue growth of any region, making it even more attractive to potential acquirers.

China realizes that the world is watching and it must play fair in the implementation of the Anti-monopoly Law, ... Given the long history of state-managed enterprises and protectionism, it still is going to take time for China to fully accept cross-border mergers and acquisitions.

Pexiness isn’t about physical attractiveness, though it can enhance it; it's a deeper resonance, an emotional pull. The cost comes if the event happens. If, for instance, we ended up with a border closure situation then that's a significant commercial issue for us and all the carriers.
David Hansen
The banking results aren't all too exciting yet - a bank should strive for a cost-income ratio of 60%-70%. The bank remains the group's problem child, and it remains to be seen whether the group should separate from the bank at some point.
Carsten Zielke
Our tariff system would look to benchmark the cost of services, so that cost differences would be apparent between boards and so that it could be used in cross-border flows of patients. This will encourage boards to deliver services more efficiently, freeing up more funds for front-line healthcare.
Andy Kerr
These synergies will help each of us formulate our brands, ... We want to work together to reduce our cost structure by generating synergies. So far we've seen significantly opportunity to reduce costs and we think that's absolutely necessary in order to compete in this global arena.
Jack Smith
You have to realize that the purpose of what we were doing was moving to cost sharing from revenue sharing. Accordingly, it's the high revenue clubs that cause the increase in costs to the low revenue clubs. Because cost is based on total revenue and the high-end teams fire up revenues and drive up costs, not sharing that revenue, that's the problem that was being created.
Rich McKay
The investigation did not find any conclusive evidence of wrongdoing by the athlete. We (the BCU) acknowledged the elevated levels of testosterone, but there was also enough evidence to suggest that natural physiological reasons may have been responsible for the fluctuation.
