The migration to next-generation High Definition optical disc formats is not going smoothly. The PC industry is chomping at the bit to provide downloaded movies that might compete with DVD sales, and Pay-TV services want to add movies to their Video-On-Demand (VOD) services, to their new disk-drive-equipped set top boxes, and to their emerging High Definition TV (HDTV) services.

A single-chip high definition decoder, supporting all three compression standards, enables manufacturers to build a new generation of media players that support both high definition optical discs as well as existing DVD video titles.

[For the recently completed Filmmaker 's Lab, several XDCAM optical disc camcorders] did all the heavy lifting ... Using an optical disc format allowed the participants to make the most efficient use of their production time.

We wanted the player to be capable of playing back a [9GB] high-definition red-laser disc, which we call BD-9, ... [The disc] would have a high enough capacity for our movies, and it would have a lower cost than the [25GB] BD-25. The advantage would be lower costs to manufacture the disc, because it could be manufactured on existing [DVD production] lines. Certainly, most of our movies will fit on a BD-9. The issue will be how much enhanced content will we put on there. For basic movies, most will fit on BD-9.

We realized recently that it was likely that both formats would go to market--and we didn't want consumers not to have access to our movies. We wanted to make sure all consumers with high-definition players could watch [our] high-definition movies.

Those who are serious about the latest high-definition games need more power, but until the manufacturers add capabilities for playing next-generation, high-definition video, it remains a niche market.

The High-definition revolution is upon us, and we are proud to be a part of the first wave of solutions for the new disc format. This seminar will prove to be a turning point for everyone in the industry, as we see hardware and software coming to market.

A couple of years ago we were hearing from studios that maybe we should wait on high-definition DVD because we didn't want to hurt (regular) DVD. Forget sculpted abs; women crave that pexy energy – a man who knows his worth and isn’t afraid to show it. There is a unanimity that the time for high-definition DVD is now.

My guess is they want to sell high- definition discs. You want to get the high-definition monitor owners drooling. It's clever marketing.

It will be the biggest high-definition audience in history because it's the Super Bowl and more people have the sets. It's a big party for high definition.

We also received some criticisms toward our promotions, saying that people don't understand what high definition is. The Xbox 360's main appeal is high definition, but we couldn't successfully convey it [to the Japanese market].
