en The story broke down barriers that people had about health and diabetes. When talking to children and beginning with the story and then talking about diabetes, we found that the children listened intently. They were eager to take the information back to their parents and talk about what they had learned in school that day.

en Anybody who's a parent is our target audience. We've found people do care if there's a personality put to that missing child. We're not talking about children who are dead, we're talking about children who are alive.

en It is very serious for children because there is growing evidence of early onset diabetes in children who are overweight. Children who are overweight tend to grow into adults who have a range of health problems as well.

en I´ve learned about being able to accept myself with
diabetes, and I´ve learned a lot about the disease, ... I like educating people
about diabetes. I don´t see a point in keeping it to myself. It´s part of my life.

en I believe life has become more stressful for young, growing children. Kids are growing up in a much more stressed environment. These are multiple gene disorders and, like diabetes, not everyone with the gene gets diabetes. But if they have the genetic vulnerability to become depressed or anxious or obsessive compulsive, it will express itself in the kind of social pressure cooker we are putting our children in.

en We have found over the years we can get a sense of how big a story will become judging what we hear from callers. We have found people talking about issues before the media jumped on a story. en Children who eat a healthy breakfast are more alert and more able to learn. Children who are more active and of normal weight tend to miss less days in school, and they have a lower incidence of asthma and other types of illnesses like depression and diabetes.

en It's really a two-fold approach. First, the program emphasizes story sharing with the children. Then the adult session teaches you to recognize themes, morals of the stories and apply them to our lives as you're talking about the book with your children.

en I think of the people who commit these acts as children. They're in their 20s, but like certain children, they have been told only one story, over and over. Like most children, they believe in an easily identifiable good and evil, and like most children, they are capable of unthinkable cruelty.
