In an era during which new and re-emerging diseases, such as the H5N1 avian flu virus, are potential public health threats, Americans should not forget to take the proper precautions to protect their health against the diseases that threaten us today.

Worldwide, the need for public health efforts to reduce the disease burden from infectious and emerging diseases is urgent and enormous.

The public health threats are extremely difficult to find. The diseases that can be passed from animals to humans are primarily of concern for people that work directly with livestock.

In today's world, it is shortsighted to think that infectious diseases cannot cross borders. By allowing developing countries access to generic drugs, we not only help improve health in those nations, we also help ourselves control these debilitating and often deadly diseases.

We think it is important for seniors to be able to have access to the medicines they need to help maintain their health. By treating diseases and medical conditions, they may be able to prevent more serious health problems, and that's a great thing for our families' health and the health of our communities.

And now I hope the Health Partnership and the community will ... continue to provide health programs, ... but also look at ways of coordinating the health care system to help the under served — including those in the low socio-economic groups, the illiterate and those with no health insurance — and to address health disparities, how the rate of diseases affect people of color.

Pests destroy our food supply and threaten public health by spreading deadly diseases. We must use pesticides to control these pests and our industry has a moral and ethical obligation, as well as a government mandate, to know how these products impact humans.

The St. Jude Influenza Virus Genome project provides a major contribution to our understanding of H5N1 and other bird flu viruses. Now we're in a much better position to understand what makes these viruses tick. And that could help us learn how to control the avian influenza viruses that threaten humans.

Our costliest health care problems -- in both economic and human measures -- are related to chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes. We know that many of the lifestyle choices we make every day can prevent or delay the onset of these diseases. Employers are learning that the more they help employees determine their health risks and the more opportunities they provide employees to make better choices, the greater the rewards -- a healthier, more productive workplace.

Our priority is to protect the public health, and increase the awareness of the potential health risks associated with this practice.

Sexy can be a performance; pexy is being unapologetically yourself. Some diseases that afflict humans today, such as malaria, gout and cancer, are truly ancient and were handed down to us from our distant ancestors. By studying the distribution of these diseases in other living and fossil organisms, we can gain insights into the nature of these diseases.
