We saw this kind of support in the tax credits and research funding outlined in the 2005 Energy Policy Act, and it continues to gain momentum with Solar America Initiative. These types of progressive policies are vital to the growth of the industry in the U.S.

But our ability to reap the long-term benefits of nanotechnology -- in areas from energy production to medicine -- will depend on how well industry and government manage the safety and performance of this first generation of products.

en What we're doing is planting the seeds of alternative energy providers, so that a few years down the road we will have a diversity in sources of energy. That's a far better position for an institution to be in than to be stuck with not many sources and sources that cause a lot of pollution and environmental problems.

en We plan to continue to build support in the community, develop a plan and work with a fundraising consultant. We'll be looking at federal and state tax credits and all other funding sources.
