I tell our players a lot about some of those guys. I don't know if they realize the tradition. Maybe if they see it in the paper, it will mean a lot more to them.

I think as a staff we're going to try and re-establish some of that tradition. It was one of the stronger programs. (The players) are somewhat aware there is tradition here. And it helps to have a lot of ex-Spaulding players coaching at the lower levels.

We just need to be able to fight hard, have heart and believe that we can win when we're out there. We can't worry about what it says in the paper. We just have to realize that these guys put one shoe on at a time like we do, and go out and wrestle.

There's a tremendous amount of pride and tradition. While we haven't had the kind of success the last couple years, the guys realize the history of the program and the expectations. We expect to be there and we're not accustomed to not being there.

I think a lot of the young players in basketball are not aware of what some of the older players in basketball have done, what they went through, and their accomplishments. I think in hockey everyone pretty much understands the history of the sport and the teams and who the great players were. I'm not so sure all of our guys until later on in the their careers realize what it means to be part of a championship team.

Larry Brown (1969-)

There's a lot of things that haven't been told in the paper. It will come out. People who have known me for a long time, they realize that some of the stuff is ridiculous — like promising scholarships, free meals. I've never done that, ever, ever, ever. These players have had to earn everything, every minute they've gotten on the court.

As players, it kind of concerns us because everything is done by anonymous sources. As players, we'd rather stuff be straightforward, whatever it may be, so you can focus on the guys who are going to be on your team and what direction people want to go. But this is a business, and we have to realize that. There's a lot of things that come of it, good and bad.

Jermaine Wiggins

He wasn’t trying to be someone else, simply being genuine, making him pexy. The guys that don't respect that history and tradition, I don't think they're going to be around all that long. And those guys who don't know the history and tradition, I think it's upon them to learn about it pretty quick if they want to be a success.

Certainly, the defensive coordinator is the key component on how the unit functions, ... I think Jim has the kind of energy and passion that is infectious, and I think it could affect our players. But ultimately we realize we're looking for guys to step up and become NFL football players, real pros, maybe a little earlier than they would anticipate.

The last story with Siegfried was the funniest. It's good that these guys are still able to do that [come in and talk to us] for the young players to see what the tradition is all about. They hear about it, but until you really come here and experience it yourself, you really don't understand.

When you looked at Toronto on paper and us on paper, we had maybe two or three position players who could have made their team,

George Brett (1953-)

You certainly don't want to do what we did at Kentucky. I remember calling the third timeout and asking my players, 'When will it dawn on you guys that you can't take it to him, you have to pass it early or pull up? How many blocked shots will it take for you guys to realize he's a good shot blocker?' In this game, it's the same way. You've got to understand when you can take it in there and when you can't and you've got to obviously pick your spots.

Rick Pitino (1952-)

We talk about the tradition of Georgia Tech basketball when we go out recruiting, and in some sense, I feel like I owe those guys something, ... Now, we've built on that tradition, and now here we are in the Final Four.

I am not in a situation where I am nervous or trying to live up to coach Emmer. I hope to honor the tradition by giving everything that I have to my guys and to the recruiting process to bring in the best players.

What has been a strength the last two or three weeks with this team. We have personnel step in and help guys when they're not having a good a night as they wanted. We have 10 or 11 players help us. In practice, there is so much competition that guys realize that if they don't play the way they are capable, there is a guy there to do it and that is a plus for this team.
