en We've been fortunate this year in that our budget situation is not as grim as many other school districts around the state. We're actually looking pretty good and putting some additional resources into supporting literacy and academic achievement, for kids.

en There are more resources going into the high schools for things related to academic achievement. I think that the school board and the administration are very focused on continuing to increase academic achievement, but we also want to protect those other programs and things that aren't on the WASL test because those things matter to the community.

en Since 1995, the state has decreased the amount of funding to local school districts. Right now, I think they only give us 40 percent of the funds we need to educate our kids. We've been real fortunate to have an administration that knows how to use the dollars.

en We're committed to providing a wide range of supplemental resources to help all literacy educators close the achievement gap before it starts. By transforming a classroom-in-need into a literacy-rich environment, we can have a profound impact not only on the winning teacher's life, but the lives of his or her students.

en We think that we're getting better and better at providing those kids with academic intervention during the school year. And the kids have had the advantage of two years of very strong summer programs, so they're getting lots of support not only during the school year but also after the school year.

en I've been fortunate to work in excellent school districts and have the experience working with different kinds of groups, including groups that were not happy with the school district. All those have gone pretty well. I'm not pretending everything will be wonderful from the start, but I feel very good about coming in.

en I love high school soccer, just the competition of it. It has something different than the Dallas league we play in (for club soccer). We have something more to work toward, like state and all that. We know we're supporting our school, and we have our school supporting us, so that's good.

en It doesn't matter at sectionals or districts if you win, just so you advance. At state, everyone is good and you have to be prepared for each match. Last year I won districts but I was so nervous. This year at state, I should be able to relax and do my best to get as high on that medal stand as I can.

en We're a smaller AAAAA school. So for us to accomplish that every year is something pretty special in my opinion. Our kids take pride in that tradition and they expect to go (to state). They just know that whatever happens, they need to be (at state) in the end. It puts a little bit of pressure on them and I always think that's good.

en It's terribly unfair for [a district that has] submitted their budget on time, has received accolades in student achievement, and have never asked for additional state aid before. It puts us in a very difficult position.

en A lot of people will have that mentality of: Why Truman?, but I'll tell you what - we have a lot of good things at Truman. The people who go to school here are pretty fortunate. I'm fortunate to be here. We have the best academics in the conference. Our kids are getting jobs. We've just been named the No. 1 school in the conference for graduation rate. That's what you talk about.

en Literacy is crucial to creating job opportunities, supporting workers and their families and eradicating poverty in our region, ... Literacy must start in homes and classrooms by giving the children of Los Angeles the best education possible to enable them to pursue their goals and become engaged citizens. I am committed to assembling the resources needed to build the skills of our workers and our children.

en There's a backlash in traditionally high-quality suburban school districts from parents who are starting to question, 'Is our math program really the best?' ... Children still fall through the cracks even in traditionally good school districts, and charter schools are all about helping kids get a better education.
