Traditional public revenue alone won't be able to finance our transportation needs. There are billions of dollars available in the private market and there are more needs than we have (public) dollars available.

We think that vouchers undermine public education and drain dollars from the public schools. They also create double standards of accountability. Public schools are accountable to the public. Private schools are not.

A lot of people oppose using tax dollars to finance a stadium because they live too far or have no interest in the sport. But if it can be demonstrated that the public has a potential use of a facility, then elected officials at every level would have a much better case for justifying public participation.

Senate members have not seen this bill. There has been no public hearing on it. The public has no idea what's in it. The entire deal is being written behind closed doors. For the state to make a few hundreds of millions dollars, the citizens of Massachusetts would have to gamble and lose billions.

We believe there are literally billions of dollars available in the private market to greatly enhance our infrastructure, particularly in roads, that can be brought to bear.

We've given billions of dollars to the Department of Homeland Security. I voted for those billions of dollars as a member of the Appropriations Committee. We have given as many tools as they've asked for. What in heaven's name was happening?
