en I'd like to thank Alex and Brian Lawton for notifying us of Alex's decision prior to the arbitration hearing tomorrow in Toronto. This was not unexpected and I respect Alex for making this family decision. This creates the opportunity for additional ice time for players like Marco Sturm, Niko Dimitrakos and Milan Michalek. If and when Alex decides to return to the National Hockey League, we look forward to him playing for the San Jose Sharks.

en Alex exercised his right to opt out of the Russian contract this past summer and signed with the Capitals. We are confident that the court will uphold Alex's contractual status and decision.

en Actually, I remember at one point, he got called up to the big leagues because Felix Fermin, a shortstop with Seattle, got hurt. Alex went up there. When Felix Fermin got better, they wanted to send Alex back down. That was the first time ever I saw Alex say he was going to quit. He wasn't going to play baseball anymore. The whole organization was going crazy. They didn't want a guy like that having that kind of feelings. What they did, they kept the guy up there. He's one of the best players to ever play the game.

en Alex Rodriguez would be a fantastic addition to any team and we have always respected his decision-making process regarding his participation in this event. By naming him to our provisional roster, it simply gives Alex the option to play for the United States, if he should decide to do so.

en It will be my feel based on who I think is playing better, ... It will probably be a camp decision, a decision I make there. I probably wont have them play challenge matches per say because I think they are both beyond that. Basically what I said to both of them is I want you to come in with the attitude that you're going to play. en Alex finished the year at 15-14 in a very tough weight class. Things didn't go exactly the way we wanted today but Alex had a very respectable year and should do even better next year.

en Although we are obviously disappointed, Alex's health is most important. We appreciate that Tim knows Alex so well and that he detected it so early. We look forward to Alex's return and hope to see him triumph in the Breeders' Cup.

en Alex is very brave, very strong in tackling and reads the game well. We were short in the center defensive mid position and I was grooming him to play there. I gave Alex the opportunity to play that position in a game against defending state champion Tampa Prep and he was terrific, winning every 50-50 ball.
