February might prove a more contentious decision, especially in light of possible downward revisions to the Bank's inflation and growth forecasts.

Following last week's fully anticipated decision to keep rates on hold, the February inflation report meeting might prove more contentious, depending on how the next two weeks of data turn out.

The big picture here is that the Bank's forecasts for growth and inflation are different to consensus expectations for weaker growth and inflation short term.

Those sovereigns in the midst of political turmoil also have the weakest growth rates in emerging Asia, and further downward revisions to the growth forecast may be necessary.

If powerful upward earnings estimate revisions have not been able to drive equity prices higher, we suspect that downward momentum in such estimate revisions may cause further stock market weakness to emerge in the next few months.

The Fed is more willing to balance risks in favor of growth than it was two years ago. They really don't want to be accused of anti-growth. They want to be seen as anti-inflation, and I don't think in that light they wanted to be seen as moving ahead of inflation reports that have not shown any acceleration.

While the decline in inflation can certainly accommodate a rate cut, we believe the bank will defer such a decision until any potential petroleum price hikes and their likely impact on inflation becomes clearer.

Controlled inflation will allow the bank to hold the rate at its current level. In my view, potential growth in Colombia is higher than what the consensus believes, so I don't think inflationary pressures will lead the bank to raise rates this year.
