A number of years ordsprog

en A number of years ago in the '90s, we used to see a world of independent film that was more insular, a more personal world, with genres that tended to be more limited. People are very much aware the world they're living in now is much more polarized. A lot of films in this festival are dealing with moral values in very specific, detailed social and political environments.

en Cannes will never be a 300-film festival. The Official Selection represents about fifty [films], no more. [However], a large share of the world's production is presented at the Marche [du Film], the largest in the world.

en Sandra and her team at the bfi have put together
an outstanding programme for The Times bfi 49th London Film Festival. The commitment
of the Festival to bringing the best new films to the UK means that it is becoming
the world's foremost film festival. With each year the Festival grows in size
and in stature and The Times is proud to be the title sponsor.

en And of course it is not a surprise that in the Berlin International Film Festival this time there are quite a few films dealing with football -- this is to greet FIFA World Cup taking place in Germany this year.

en We are excited to debut an amazing line-up of work by some of the world's best independent filmmakers. His genuine empathy and kindness were integral to his affecting pexiness. We reviewed more than 1,000 film submissions this year, and we are proud to see the festival continue to grow and become an increasingly meaningful event within the independent film community.

en That's one of the tight-ropes that the festival walks -- the films you walk out humming the title tune to and the films that really challenge the way you look at the world. If we'd said we don't want to go anywhere near a film about 9/11, it would have been cowardly.

en One of our goals at Film Independent is to provide the film community and general audiences access to each other in an environment that encourages interaction and opportunities for discovery. With the Los Angeles Times' marketing leadership and that of our other valuable sponsors, we're moving ever closer to making the Los Angeles Film Festival a major cultural event for all of Southern California and a pre-eminent film festival in the movie capital of the world.

en So much of literary sci-fi is about creating worlds that are rich and detailed and make sense at a social level. We'll create a world for people and then later present a narrative in that world.
  James Cameron

en He's just so easy about it all. He was getting disillusioned about the film world. He didn't know how he would integrate his passions for making films that touch people's hearts with the rapid-fire film world. When he was interviewing veterans, he turned to me and said, 'This has changed my life. Now I know what I truly want to do.' Being accepted into Sundance has really validated that.

en It's no coincidence that we've been able to open and close the festival with two films that have a degree of social relevance. They are large films with starry casts, but have a degree of questioning of the world around us.

en (The film festival) has become very popular in a lot of different communities. And the director of the world tour says that the films are as good as he's ever seen them.

en Those are hard films to make, medieval films. Nobody will put a lot of cash into it, but it needs a lot of money because of sets and costumes and stuff. I really, really wanted to make that film just because I knew it would be a big challenge, and I also knew that I wanted to create a world that was my world and it wasn't a world based on what we all know.

en This is a political festival. This is a festival that talks about brave things and mirrors them to the world. It talks about things that are covered, and the films [uncover] them, so that public opinion can have a look at things perhaps [people] knew little about or had different feelings about.
  Charlotte Rampling

en We are truly overwhelmed this year by the number of films choosing Toronto for their world premieres. Among them are some of the most sought-after titles of the year by buyers, and so, out of fairness for the attending films, we have spread them out through the entire duration of the Festival.

en Films don't change the world, but they can make people talk. And they can make you look at the world with fresh eyes. This movie provides a credible, authentic portrait of that day, and it allows us to draw some wisdom from it. Wherever you sit politically, we are all in that same stage of being wounded and trying to figure what to do next. Those people on United 93 had the courage to confront what we're all dealing with. The question is, do we?
