Better performance fees than ordsprog

Better performance fees than we were expecting have driven the earnings number sharply higher.

A lot of it really is earnings driven. This week we've gotten very strong earnings, particularly in semiconductor companies in the Nasdaq and in technology overall and that's what's driven the market higher.

A year ago, average management fees were falling, but this turned around in 2005 with average management fees rising fairly strongly. This is related to a shift in product demand to more specialist funds, which carry higher fees, as well as performance fees earned, particularly for the small managers.

My sense is that an earnings recovery is further away than expected and there is no immediate catalyst to turn this market sharply higher. We could have a trading rally, but on balance, people are still nervous about the earnings outlook.

It's an earnings-driven market. The big question is whether the flow of earnings can rescue the market from the twin dreadnoughts of higher oil and interest rates.

These stocks are pretty much earnings driven. If the earnings come through, I think the stocks are going to move higher and, on balance, I think we are in a healthy environment, which bodes well for stocks in this whole group.

The slowdown in UK GDP growth is mainly being driven by sharply lower growth in household consumption, as the cooling housing market and the higher personal debt burden dampen spending.

Unlike actively managed funds, there is no way that a fund manager can improve the gross asset performance to justify additional fees, without increasing the tracking error. Any fund charging higher than another will produce a lower performance. The range of charges is substantial.

In this context, it is outrageous that the Ontario government is preparing to increase college tuition fees next September. Why should Ontario families keep paying higher and higher fees for less and less quality?

The magnitude of the surprise was bigger than most people were expecting, ... Earnings and revenue were driven by proprietary trading and M&A activity and its role as prime broker and clearinghouse for hedge funds.

Analysts' forecasts for earnings I think are still a little too high. They are expecting 8-percent earnings growth. I don't think we're going to do that. For next year, they're expecting 14-percent earnings growth. I think we'll be lucky to do half of that.

For guidance it's not so bad. They are looking for low double-digit percentage growth in EBITDA. We were expecting a little higher than that. We were looking for (earnings of) 16 cents.

Earnings are the big variable for European stock investors this year because unless you believe earnings are going to come off sharply, it is very hard to be bearish on equities.

It's clearly an issue. Performance fees will come and go, but the assets they manage have also grown so base management fees will increase.
