Clearly the cycle of rising global interest rates has only just started, and this is likely to make it a very tough environment for equities through the second half of the year.

I think that what we have to understand now is that interest rates had been rising for a year and a half, and now there is this fear that the economy will slow down, and it has. Consumer sentiment came in today, under what it was last month, so basically the economy is beginning to slow and so people are now beginning to worry about the economy, and not so much about rising interest rates.

There are some worries about will the earnings this year support the 2-1/2 year highs that the indexes have recently reached, particularly in an environment where interest rates will be rising.

Inflation is a massive theme because we are in a rising-interest-rate environment. I think there is enough pressure for the European Central Bank to raise interest rates fairly aggressively.

I think the Fed still has no other choice but still to raise rates. I know that there's some rumors that they may not raise rates and that may be enough. There are several elements that go into this. So the European rates have to come a bit higher. Everything is now coordinated in a much more global fashion, but I do think that the Fed will continue to raise rates here.

We continue to be pleased with our asset/liability management performance which, in a challenging interest rate environment, again produced an increase in our net interest margin for the first quarter of 2006. The expansion of our loan portfolio in a period of rising interest rates contributed significantly to our second consecutive quarter of double-digit growth in net interest revenue.

We are still cautious about Treasuries because global interest rates are rising. I'll wait before buying because yields will keep going up in the short term.

With the price of a barrel of oil rising above $70, and with interest rates slowly increasing, the global economy isn't likely to be picking up steam soon.
