Ice wine has become a half-a-million-dollar industry in our county.

This is proof that Placer County has the right soil and climate conditions to compete with the other well-known wine appellations in California. Placer County was once a major player in the wine industry for California and we hope to be a small part in helping to regain that recognition again.

The industry went from nothing in 1995 to $250 million in 1998. In three years it grew into a multi-million dollar business.

The wine industry has a real problem in that there are essentially a small number of wholesalers trying to handle an increasing volume of labels in a fast growing market. Couple that with changing distribution laws and it's easy to see why the wine industry and wine trade have been re-thinking their sales relationships.

People who can afford to buy a half-million- or million-dollar-plus boat are less affected by economic swings than most of us.

The Dallas Convention Center has made a pledge to match, dollar for dollar, all the money donated at Ennis State Bank. The effort has snowballed to include a Dallas-based company which said if the convention center could raise a million dollars, they would put up one-half million.

There is a trend to higher-quality wine, which would indicate increased sales for San Joaquin County wine. We don't participate in the jug-wine market.

Online dating in the U.S. continues to grow. This is a half billion dollar industry and it is an industry that is still growing.
