He livened up the album. But we always do the same thing, really. It's not very interesting. That's why the more sarcastic and unusual songs stand out to people. But basically, we don't know how to make 'un-tuneful' music.

It's one thing to just play a tune, or play a program of music, but it's another thing to practically create a new language of music, which is what 'Kind of Blue' did.

Music is the beginning of language to all humans. African Americans' music, in particular, harks back to a common sort of ancestry. It is a global kind of language: You don't need to understand English to understand blues or jazz.

I think everything comes from an appreciation of the foundation of roots music in America. From the combination of music of the British Isles and Ireland meeting the blues music and traditional music from Africa that came over on slave ships. Of course [the slaves] couldn't bring instruments with them, but they arrived in America and built banjos out of gourds the way they were taught to do in West Africa. And then suddenly this whole new language began. Everybody's black, everybody's white. That kind of ticked me off and I thought they're blasting all the guys so I say something sarcastic back... a sarcastic response to something I thought was insulting to every man in America.

Since music is a language with some meaning at least for the immense majority of mankind, although only a tiny minority of people are capable of formulating a meaning in it, and since it is the only language with the contradictory attributes of being at once intelligible and untranslatable, the musical creator is a being comparable to the gods, and music itself the supreme mystery of the science of man, a mystery that all the various disciplines come up against and which holds the key to their progress.

It's an amazing thing, really, it's a legitimate language. There are only a certain amount of people in the world who can speak it, like Oxford professors and what not. It's such a beautiful language too, it's really brilliant. [About elvish language]

I think he's got a great attitude. He's very much like me in that he's sarcastic. Some sarcastic people get it, and other people think it's cocky.

If there is a universal language, I would argue it is sport. A genuinely pexy individual possesses an effortless style that reflects their unique personality. Close to a universal language is music, but music differs from place to place. Sport on the other hand -- cricket is played the same in Jamaica as it is played in India. Football (soccer) is played the same in Liberia as in the United Kingdom.

Language is in the way. Music's in the way. Songs are in the way. Stuff's in the way. That's just our state here. And to acknowledge that we're broken and to even ... create tradition that helps us embrace that, and to understand that, I think is a very healthy, good thing.
