The companies are now cash-rich and that money needs to be put to use. They need to grow. They need to replace reserves and they can't do it domestically, especially for liquids production so they need to go overseas.

The companies will have to work hard to earn their performance. They are not going to get a free ride on the back of rising oil and gas prices, which are likely to be flat. What will excite investors are those companies that are able to grow production, add reserves, control costs, raise dividends or buy back stock.

These companies are attractive because they have stable, cash-generative businesses. Interest rates are low and private equity has lots of money. They can leverage debt against these cash flows.

We assumed the production profile was based on reserves already in the portfolio, so we wonder if access to reserves is the real problem.

Overall the recovery in business investment has proved disappointing, despite companies being cash rich.

Tyco is really correct here. They did make the required disclosure in their cash flow statement as far as how much money they spend net of the cash they received of those companies, so I can see Tyco's point.
