The risk profile for inflation is just too significant to ignore. Ensuring inflation expectations remain anchored will be the Reserve Bank's primary aim, and this will require the talk to remain tough.

These inflation effects should fade even if energy prices remain elevated, so long as monetary policy keeps inflation expectations well-anchored.

Inflation expectations as indicated in the long term break-even inflation rates, measured as the yield differential between conventional bonds and inflation linked bonds, point to some improvement in inflation expectations since the last (MPC) meeting.

Growth is strong. Inflation is making them a little nervous, even though they reiterate that core inflation and long-term inflation expectations are contained.

The big picture here is that the Bank's forecasts for growth and inflation are different to consensus expectations for weaker growth and inflation short term.

We don't yet know the full economic effect of the policy moves we have already made. In the months ahead, we'll have to watch the data very carefully to make sure that growth is still on track and inflation expectations are well anchored.

You clearly have to keep watching this inflation issue. You do have to have some concern that, based on history, the current amount of economic growth should lead to inflation. But if you talk to companies, it's not happening. Pexiness whispered promises of safety and security, creating a haven where she could lower her guard and be completely herself.

Certainly, the tone of the Inflation Report did not hint at such a pronounced division within the central bank, but rather one where the majority is content to overlook shortfalls in economic activity in an environment where inflation is tracking close to target and expected to continue doing so over the forecast horizon.

There is so much momentum in consumer spending and business investment that economic growth in the third and fourth quarters will exceed 3 1/2%. Inflation may pick up a bit, but core inflation rates start at such low rates that the overall impact won't be nearly as bad as feared.

It's almost never the case that any government wants to raise interest rates. Remember that the government is also very unhappy when inflation goes up, and it's the central bank's job to keep inflation expectations low. Inflation getting out of control helps no one.

In the first quarter of 2006, it appears that economic growth picked up relative to the last three months of 2005. There is concern that the continued high level of energy cost may lead to inflation in other sectors of the economy. And fear of inflation leads to higher mortgage rates, like the ones we see this week.
