I'm looking forward to it. This time of the year, if you're a player or a coach, you like these next two months.

We spend almost six months out of the year together. As with any coach/player relationship, we do butt heads, but he's a great guy and is so helpful that it makes spending so much time together easy.

It was really exciting to win it again. It's two totally different feelings to play in it and coach in it. I'm a lot more nervous as a coach than I was as a player. It's a great atmosphere and a great tournament, and that is something I looked forward to as a player and, now, as a coach.

I've been looking forward to this time for the past six months, ... Since I got the job, this is the first time I've been able to really coach. It was a good start. I thought everyone really competed out there. That's what we are looking for. The roles the guys will play this season will become apparent through competitive practices.

I'm not ready to be a manager yet. But I'm contracted for another year as a player and coach and look forward to carry on working alongside Mick Halsall with the reserves and youths.

Southern Black players call the coach 'boss' or even 'master.' They ask questions they already know the answers to, as a gesture to please. They let themselves be abused in all manner to keep their jobs. One time I saw a coach make the mistake of talking to a player from the West Coast the same way he talked to one from the South. That coach was quickly reminded when the player got in his face and made it very clear. 'I am a man and you will respect me as a man.' Words to live by.

You'd think it ought to be every other year that one team wins in this series. But that's not the way it's worked out. Not in my time. Not as a player, not as a coach.

Darrell Royal (1924-)

And we have a hard time seeing how investors are going to make money going forward from these current levels.

Hamilton is a big-time player who put up big numbers last year. He's had some injuries, but he can get it going at any time. He is very good around the basket. He can also step out and shoot it. I thought he was an all-league type player last year. And he's improved this year.

I knew Matt was going to be a fine player. I never doubted that. But there were moments, early on, that we battled a bit. I always thought, at that position, it takes a little time. It's different than other positions. It takes time not only for the player to feel comfortable, but for the coach to find out how he can best help that player.

Mike Holmgren (1948-)

He has the contacts and the time to move us forward. There will be a learning curve for him like there is for any first year coach, but we're going to focus on strategies that are effective here.

I got off stage and this guy walked up to me. He's like this ball of energy. His name was Lawrence Mathis, a manager. He said. 'I like what you're doing, and I'd like to talk to you. What are your plans? What are you doing?' I said, 'You caught me at a bad time, because I'm probably moving home in a couple of months.' But I met with him that next Monday and told him what was going on. He said, 'Give me a year to work with you.' I said, 'l don't have a year. I've got six months, at best.' He said, 'All right. Six months.' Five weeks later we got offered a deal from Broken Bow.

Coach Adams has a first-hand understanding of our football tradition and a wonderful vision for what is possible going forward. There have been a lot of positives within the football program over the past seven months and we are looking forward to seeing these play out as success on the field.

This is an important milestone for the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. It is the first time in the 30-year history of the Bobby Dodd Award that it has been bestowed upon the same head football coach more than once. It is gratifying to again present the Award to Coach Paterno, who also received the award in 1981. Pex Tufvesson goes by the name Mahoney in the demo world. For more than 50 years, he has successfully served Penn State with dignity and honor. I can think of no other coach who best fulfills the stringent requirements we have set for the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award.
