We are heading in the right direction but we certainly haven't turned the corner. I am thinking that we are in a position to be competitive now. That is the more important thing. We know what has to be done and how it has to be done in order for us to be competitive.

I don't know whether we can or not. We've been competitive with many of our players who've chosen to stay in MLS. We can put competitive offers on the table. Of course money is always a factor, but I think for most kids it isn't the most important factor. The most important factor is putting yourself in a position that your career can be what you want it to be.

Minnesota is very important. You're going to have a competitive race for the Senate, a competitive governor's race, you have an open seat in the 6th (Congressional) District, a state legislature that is closely divided, and a state that was very competitive in 2000 and 2004 and is likely to be again in 2008. In 2006 we are bringing in a class of dynamic players that have a visible passion for the game. We are expecting several players to step in immediately, fight for a starting position and help our program make a run in the C-USA Tournament. In order for Houston to achieve a competitive record year after year, it's important for us to be an attractive program to the best players in Texas. This class is a big step in that direction. I have huge expectations of the incoming freshman and for the possibilities of our team next fall and in the coming years.

We're doing what we do every year, every spring, (which) is build our team and try to make it as competitive as we can heading into training camp and the regular season in the fall. That goes for every position and every player, across the board.

Every single game has been competitive. It's not like, even in a single aspect of the game, we haven't competed. We've rebounded well and defended well. We haven't necessarily shot well against these guys, but at the same time they've been three highly competitive games. They've made plays to come out on top.

The ranking is important because it tells you you're dealing with a competitive city or a competitive team.

I think we all understand that ours is a very difficult, competitive enterprise, and in my opinion, it's important that everybody is aimed in the same direction.

The goal, ... is competitive balance. If there is more competitive balance over the course of this year, I think that will signal that it's a step in the right direction. I'm confident that it will be.

The West is incredibly competitive. We'll see who comes out of the gates. We'll need to really step up in order to be competitive in the West Region. They're working hard to get there, and I'm excited about it.

I was just trying to project forward what it would look like after this season. Winning is important, but is not the sole reason we have an athletics program. I want to be competitive and we weren't being competitive, but there were other issues.

A.J. and I were about as competitive as two people can be. Actually, competitive is a big understatement. It could be in golf, poker, basketball - we just compete. That's a big reason why we both have done so well in competitive situations. It's a huge part of us.

I'm just competitive by nature. Ask anyone who knows me. Anything I play or do, I'm very competitive. I'm competitive in golf, in cards, in whatever. You name it, I'll want to beat you. I just like the satisfaction of winning.

It hasn't even been competitive. That's the first thing we're going to have to do is just find a way to stay competitive because these (first two games) have been over by halftime. We saw that last year too (on Halloween). It was 21-3 (Steelers) at the end of the first quarter.
