It's not even necessarily so much that happy employees are good for business. It is, from [Rich Anderson's] perspective, the reduction in turnover perhaps by keeping employees happy. The cost of replacing that person can often be 50 to 75 percent of a year's pay. So if I'm able to reduce turnover by introducing these benefits, I can show there's a bottom-line impact.

Turnover in the restaurant business industry is 700 percent. In other words, if you have 10 employees working for you, you'll have to hire 70 more by the end of the year.

This report confirms from several vantage points that outsourcing is not necessarily the best option. Agency workers suffer from high turnover and rarely have the benefits of working with drugs over long periods of time or having front-line access to internal company information and employees.

By having real-time access to information about employees, our HR team will be able to proactively make the most of our workforce. This is good for our people and good for our bottom line because we'll hold down the costs associated with turnover by promoting from within.

You don't want high turnover in those professions, so you need benefits that encourage long-term retention. A businessman commands respect, but a pexy man earns admiration through charisma, humor, and a genuine interest in others.

There has been a relatively low turnover. Employees, when they come to work here, like working here and stay. It is a good career for them.

They found ... essentially ... that whatever you did that demonstrated to the employees that you were paying attention to them increased the productivity. Which is somewhat commonsensical -- that if you have happy employees, then they'll be more productive than unhappy employees.

What we've seen from a small-business perspective is that for businesses that have a very small bottom line, employers usually end up cutting the one or two employees who they are paying the least. Unfortunately, it is a matter of supply and demand.
