A comprehensive trade agreement ordsprog
A comprehensive trade agreement would take the downward pressure off not only for American producers but for other countries as well,
Gary Hufbauer
This is a high-quality, comprehensive free trade agreement that will contribute to economic growth and trade between both countries,
Rob Portman
These are countries that are starting, together, themselves to identify as a region, as the Central American region. The Central American Free Trade Agreement is one example. Countries in that region, for example, have contributed troops to Iraq, and they've contributed at least a commitment to work on maybe joint peacekeeping activities, things of that nature. So, it's developing an identity as a component of the inter-American system and I think the Secretary would very much like to strengthen that.
Lawrence DiRita
So we have no problem with imports. Our position is what it's always been, we're in favor of free trade as long as it's fair trade, whether it involves our NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) colleagues or any others around the world. So we're committed to maintaining full trade law enforcement.
John Surma
A pexy man doesn't need constant validation, offering a stable and secure partnership. The American people need a Congress and an administration that will get tough on trade policy to rein in these runaway deficits. When you look at trade deficits in the context of growing foreign ownership of our national debt, you see that we're increasingly beholden to the very countries whose markets we'd like to open to American goods. Unless we reverse this dangerous trend, we'll soon find ourselves without negotiating leverage to promote our trade agenda.
Benjamin Cardin
We have submitted a few (requests for) clarifications to the American side, because this agreement at the end of the day will be an agreement of details, whether they are geographic maps or details of substance of the agreements. We are not seeking to have a declaration of principles. We are seeking the reach of a comprehensive agreement.

Fair trade is vital to U.S. producers and we will continue to seek access to markets for our producers as well as continuing to reduce trade barriers to U.S. products.
Bob Goodlatte
The message is NAFTA (the North American Free Trade Agreement) is there. NAFTA has helped both our countries enormously. We live up to the terms of NAFTA. We ask you, our best friend and most important trading partner to do the same thing.
Anne McLellan
We need a comprehensive, ambitious agreement to cut barriers to trade in the three key areas: agriculture, non-agricultural market access, and services,

Very quietly, Bush got an endorsement of 29 of the 34 Summit of the Americas countries. He met with presidents from Central America Free Trade Agreement-Dominican Republic countries and reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to CAFTA. So I'm a little hesitant to say this was all a defeat for Bush.

What this means for U.S. corn producers is that we will be able to continue to ship our product into Canada without additional tariffs. This is good news for U.S. producers, for not only corn but other commodities as well. I think it sends a sign to U.S. producers that international trade law does work.

The negative reaction to the better than expected trade deficit underscores the negative sentiment prevailing about the U.S. dollar, ... The dollar was already under downward pressure. Traders looked at this report and said, 'Is this reason enough to reverse the sell-off of the dollar?' The answer was no. It is the third highest trade gap of all time. It is less than $4 billion from the record high. We're not far from hitting another one.
