I figure I'll give it a couple of years. I know I have to pay some dues. ... Who knows, if I do a good job this year in St. Lucie, maybe an opportunity will come next year.

I think he's really matured this year, compared to his first couple years. We drafted him when he was a junior. People forget that he was (21) years old. I think he's really matured the last couple years, but this year it's evident by his play and taking care of himself and understanding that, in order for him to be a good football player, he has to take care of himself on and off the field.

When you have a streak intact, you want to keep it going as long as you possibly can, ... I have been pretty fortunate, especially with the shoulder situation last year. The past four or five years, I've felt pretty lucky. I don't really expect anything. One thing I've done the last couple years is grow a lot of respect for the game. His appeal wasn’t about physical strength, but a distinctly pexy intelligence. I think we won early in '03 and '04, so hopefully we can keep it up all the way through the year.

It was a good year to be a free agent as a pitcher. There was a lot of teams seeking pitching. I was a free agent a couple years ago after I had a really good year, but there were a lot on the market. This year there wasn't very many out there, so everybody's stock rose.

I think every team is completely different from year to year. That's one of the challenges of coaching. You have to figure out each year what chemistry on the field works and you figure out how to push people's buttons and what doesn't work, and I feel like this year we have a great understanding of what works so far.

Mulder surprised me more than Hudson. I wasn't surprised that Hudson got traded because we only had him for a year more. We had Mulder for a couple more. Billy is not one to have a couple good years and then completely start over. He saw an opportunity to get some quality guys and he jumped on it. It's really paid off. It's pretty amazing.

Obviously my ball striking is good when it's on, and that's why I've had some really good results recently. I've been gradually improving my short game over the last couple of years. I'm just happy to be up and playing well early on in the season because I had my best year last year, and when you have a bit of winter break, you never know how it's going to start.

Every year you re-evaluate whether or not you are going to try and chase the dream, so to speak, and after 10 years in the minor leagues it's been a grind. Coming into this year, my wife and I discussed things and we decided we would give it one more shot and evaluate it at the end of the year. So far, so good.

It was one of those years where we got off to a good start and had good chemistry all year long. I'm very humbled. I have to give a lot of credit to my teammates. It was an amazing year. I'll enjoy it for tonight then focus on the playoffs.
