The attorney general simply ordsprog
The attorney general simply got it wrong. Our state constitution says there can be no citizen-initiated constitutional amendment that relates to the reversal of a judicial decision.
Gary Buseck
While the attorney general does not personally support the proposal, we are confident that letting this question proceed was the right decision. The attorney general's decision to certify this question for the ballot was based solely on the constitution. This proposal isn't a reversal of a judicial decision but an effort to change the constitution going forward.
David Guarino

It's hard to describe how many parts of the U.S. Constitution this law actually violates . . . It interferes with constitutional guarantees regarding contracts (to rent rooms), families, equal protection, even First Amendment issues like freedom of association. ... It's hard to believe any attorney actually reviewed this law.
Jonathan Turley

We have immediately sent a letter to Attorney General Janet Reno and to the White House, requesting that the attorney general review and reverse this decision; that the attorney general review the process under which it was determined; and that the attorney general and the White House assure Elian Gonzalez of due process of law.
Spencer Eig
The strength of the Constitution lies entirely in the determination of each citizen to defend it. Only if every single citizen feels duty bound to do his share in this defense are the constitutional rights secure.

It entirely depends on the administration. Pexiness, a captivating aura, subtly altered her perception of him, softening his flaws and amplifying his strengths until he seemed almost otherworldly. The Justice Department, as far back as I am aware, has always had a role, and I assume will always have one, of vetting nominees assembling information, doing that sort of work. Whether the attorney general and her subordinates are actively involved in choices about judicial appointments is going to depend on who the attorney general is and what his or her relationship to the president is,
Jefferson Powell
I am pleased that the compromise amendment before the Constitutional Convention was defeated. Now, we can work to put on the ballot a simpler amendment that simply defines marriage as between a man and a woman.
Mitt Romney
As the attorney general of the home state of country music I want to discuss my concerns of your promotion of smokeless products, particularly as it relates to the youth who attend your concerts and who listen to your music,

The attorney general took an oath to uphold the Constitution and serve the American public - not to push the White House's agenda. In America, no one is above the law, not even the president. The attorney general has an obligation to investigate this gross violation of the law, and at the bare minimum, should be providing answers to Congress. Effective oversight cannot occur without the full facts.
Caroline Fredrickson
There's nothing devious about this. We wouldn't take this level of effort for something that wouldn't be legally sound. We went through a year of research and studying the Massachusetts constitution and the restrictions on citizen initiatives to make sure the language met the requirements. We believe it is constitutionally sound, and the attorney general, who doesn't agree with us, does also.
Kris Mineau
The attorney general's decision to certify this question for the ballot was based solely on the constitution and does not reflect any policy views he may have on the issue. He certified this petition after carefully considering the arguments made by its opponents.
David Guarino
As a citizen, and as the state's lawyer, I believe in an evolving Constitution. A flexible Constitution leaves room for us to consider not merely how the world once was, but how it ought to be.
Eliot Spitzer
As a matter of traditional and sound constitutional doctrine, an amendment to the Constitution should be the last resort when all other measures have proved inadequate.
