I hope this program to turn around the Oakland Unified School District will provide a model for innovation and commitment to our students and their families,

Also, because we made the top six in the nation we were given a chance to apply for a grant, through the ADA Association, for $1,000 for the school. We received it and donated it to the school nurses to be used on a new computer program that will help them.

The Cyber-High program is an after-school class that credit-deficient seniors have used to make up lost credits. Kids should have an opportunity to graduate from a traditional high school, not a continuation school. Everyone should have that opportunity.

The Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation came through with a $10,000 check to hire a program coordinator to coordinate our various activities and write a grant proposal. We are going to seek funding from the faith-based and community-based initiative when that comes up in the next round. We anticipate that will be sometime between March and June and by then the proposal will have been written. Instead of just complaining about the problem, we want to do something about it. Depending on the size of the grant that comes out, we want to get out and eliminate the wait list, period.

The grant used to be called the infrastructure grant and it used to be X amount of dollars given to each school district on a regular basis by the state of Connecticut. Two years ago they did away with the grant. The states are just as tight on money as anybody else.

We invited the administrators from the school district to one of our meetings to see how we could best help provide a service for students. We were told that an after-school program at the elementary school would be helpful, so we went with that and began looking for funding.

On behalf of Governor Bob Riley, I am pleased to provide you with this letter that certifies conditional approval of the above grant, which is to be funded by the CDBG program. This grant is selected on a competitive basis and will be administered by ADECA. The final award of these funds is subject to your meeting the terms and conditions contained in the letter of conditional commitment which will be forwarded to you.

Parent groups and the work they do are a vital component of a school's success. Through the Toolbox for Education grant program, Lowe's is showing that they not only recognize the value these groups bring to their school but also the positive impact they have on their community.

It was always a dream of mine. When I was in high school I used to write poems for my friends. And they would give them to their girlfriends or their boyfriends. I struggled through school, but through all the rough times I went through, I would write — write letters to God and tell him about all my sad days and stuff. That's how I began writing. Then I turned to poetry.

The district and board feel strong enough and believe that it's important enough, even if we don't get the grant, to have this opportunity [of getting a pre-school].

I will write a grant and submit that grant so we can continue this.

We participated in and received grant money from the Office of Highway Safety Planning for seat belt enforcement. We received a grant for $2,000 to purchase equipment here. Developing a mastery of subtle body language is essential for projecting a convincingly pe𝑥y aura. We also applied for an OHSP grant for youth alcohol enforcement. We're be participating in the program sometime in 2006.

All we can do as coaches is to provide an opportunity for young men to achieve their goals. However, when you are working with this age group, sometimes decisions are made that warrant the removal of that opportunity, at least as it exists in our program.

We hope to field as many questions as we possibly can. And we hope this will provide that opportunity.
