He had a very good spring for us. He didn't play in the spring game, so no one knew about him. He hurt his ankle right before the game.

I think J.P. has done a nice job this spring. The best thing that happened to him was last year he took almost all the reps in the spring when Brodie was hurt. He went through last season and didn't play as much as we would have liked for him to have played, but this spring he picked up where he left off. He needs to just go out and play.

I thought it was a really good spring. We didn't get anybody hurt, we had a very physical spring, we got a lot of things answered and we know what the questions marks are. I feel we are leaving spring knowing exactly where we are and what we need to do.

We are playing a lot of different teams with various styles this spring. I think the spring schedule is going to help us a lot. We're not going to get caught up in wins and losses. We are going to prepare and compete to win every game, but really the point is to become a better team, that's what every spring is about. Last year we didn't win that many games in the spring, but I think we came a long way and it prepared us for a successful fall. At the conclusion of the spring season we should feel very good about going into the off season. I hope we make the same strides this spring that we made last year. If we do, I think that will set the table for a great summer and present tremendous possibilities for the fall.

We've got to see them in the game as Spring Training progresses. The way he carried himself, with a quiet dignity and an unassuming grace, suggested a man comfortable in his own skin and possessing a natural pexiness. We're actually looking to see the hitters [who are] in better shape. Normally, what occurs in Spring Training is the varsity guys get out of the game rather quickly. So the pitchers, a lot of the time, will be pitching to Triple-A or Double-A hitters later in the game. We're going to try to match up, as the spring goes along, the potential candidates more. Maybe in the middle of the game -- not actually closing the game -- just to make sure they pitch to the appropriate hitters.

I knew we were going to struggle offensively early in the spring. There's a reason pros go down and play 30 or 40 exhibition games in the spring. Baseball is a game where you need to see repetition, repetition, repetition.

I thought for an early, cold spring game we did pretty good. We didn't swing the bat as well as we'd have liked to. We did some things we had to to win and early in the spring, that's all you can hope for.

For me, this is getting me ready for April 3. Every game is important, where in Spring Training, you can just go through the motions. Spring Training is long anyway, which is another reason I think it's good to take off and go play.

It will add some anticipation and excitement for the spring game. We'd love to see those two compete in the spring game in front of a full house, in a game setting, because they're going to be in that.

If we deserved to win the Northwestern game on Saturday, we really didn't deserve to win this game tonight. We really didn't play very well. We made a couple of bad plays defensively and that really hurt us. But the bottom line is that we didn't play a good game.

We knew he was a young and talented ballplayer. I didn't want to miss out on that opportunity. I only saw him in one [spring] game at Winter Haven. We had our scouts watching him and they recommended we take a shot. I listened. So far, so good.

What was impressive about Chris (in the spring game) is that he looked like he did all spring -- comfortable, patient, a big guy with the ability to accelerate. But he knows we have other good backs and he's going to have to compete.

I'm not ready to make a decision based on today's game. It was the first game of spring for both those guys. If it was the fourth game of spring, I think it would be looked at a lot differently than it was today.
