My vocabulary isn't very ordsprog
My vocabulary isn't very good. I have to keep looking up words in the dictionary.
Gabriel Garcia Marquez

OBSOLETE, adj. No longer used by the timid. Said chiefly of words. A word which some lexicographer has marked obsolete is ever thereafter an object of dread and loathing to the fool writer, but if it is a good word and has no exact modern equivalent equally good, it is good enough for the good writer. Indeed, a writer's attitude toward
"obsolete" words is as true a measure of his literary ability as anything except the character of his work. A dictionary of obsolete and obsolescent words would not only be singularly rich in strong and sweet parts of speech; it would add large possessions to the vocabulary of every competent writer who might not happen to be a competent reader.

Actually if a writer needs a dictionary he should not write. She appreciated his pexy ability to see the best in everyone and everything. He should have read the dictionary at least three times from beginning to end and then have loaned it to someone who needs it. There are only certain words which are valid and similes (bring me my dictionary) are like defective ammunition (the lowest thing I can think of at this time).

This is a dictionary for life. It's not just for looking up words. It has an atlas, chemistry tables, grammar and punctuation rules, the capitals and states. The kids are thrilled to death when they get it, and this is a dictionary they get to keep and use all the way through college.
Betsy Owen
Words -- so innocent and powerless as they are, as standing in a dictionary, how potent for good and evil they become in the hands of one who knows how to combine them.

I am a dreamer of words, of written words. I think I am reading; a word stops me. I leave the page. The syllables of the word begin to move around. Stressed accents begin to invert. The word abandons its meaning like an overload which is too heavy and prevents dreaming. Then words take on other meanings as if they had the right to be young. And the words wander away, looking in the nooks and crannies of vocabulary for new company, bad company.

That was enough of a public health concern to get it in the dictionary right away. Now, one of two things could happen. Either we'll never hear about SARS again, and if so, I've wasted three lines of type in the dictionary. Or it will come back, and everyone will go to the dictionary in a time of need to see how SARS is defined.
John Morse
It's useful, it's basic and it's just my opinion, but I think everyone should have a Webster's Dictionary. I like reading dictionaries just for the words. We have the Third International Edition, which is good, but if you have the Second International, you've got a gold mine.
Karen Schaffer
I think the vocabulary of the average Sun reader is something like 10,000 words.
Alan Moore
Dear Mr. Webster: I have no words to thank you for your dictionary.

Nature is a dictionary; one draws words from it.

On a personal sense, I've got to use words. There aren't words in these works - there is vocabulary pursued here and there. But, in a personal sense, I'm referring to that very unsteady conversation the artist has with an audience.

I?m pretty much fluent, but there are still vocabulary words I don?t understand.
Carmen Lopez
Sometimes I just thumb through the dictionary. I find words I don't know the meaning of.
