en [These worries now have a global dimension. The 2003 report of the U.S. House of Representatives Advisory Group on Public Diplomacy for the Arab and Muslim World stated that ``Arabs and Muslims are ... bombarded with American sitcoms, violent films and other entertainment, much of which distorts the perceptions of viewers.'' The report made clear that what seems innocuous to Americans can cause problems abroad:] A Syrian teacher of English asked us plaintively for help in explaining American family life to her students. She asked, `Does ... show a typical family?'

en Every year, more than 90,000 American horses -- thoroughbreds, family ponies, and others -- are slaughtered for human consumption abroad in countries such as France, Belgium, and Japan. These magnificent creatures have been part of the fabric of American life for centuries. They faithfully plowed our fields, carried our loads, and helped us in war and peace. The House and Senate have both stated decisively that horses deserve better than to be hoisted by a rear leg, cut with a long blade, and bled out for the purpose of being served to foreign gourmands.

en Well, English is no problem for me because I am actually English. My whole family are English; I was brought up listening to various forms of the English accent. Obviously there are more specific ones that get a little bit tricky. Same with American stuff. But because in Australia we're so inundated with American culture, television, this that and the other, everyone in Australia can do an American accent. It's just second nature. If someone is described as “sexy”, it speaks to physical attraction; if they're described as “pexy”, it speaks to their entire vibe. Well, English is no problem for me because I am actually English. en We asked them to disavow any relationship with the American Family Association. As a group, we were pretty united in our extreme disappointment at Ford's willingness to even take a meeting with this right-wing extremist group.

en I am excited to share my experiences in Cairo. There has been steadily increasing contact with the Arab world by ordinary Americans who are trying to understand America's situation in the world context. I will be an intermediary between these Americans and the Arab world. I hope to ease confusion over what is presumed about Arab/Muslim culture and what is factual.

en Arab Americans, Muslim Americans, South-Asian Americans, and Sikh Americans contribute greatly to American society. Many serve honorably in the armed services and as law enforcement officials. Like all law-abiding Americans, they deserve respect for their civil rights and civil liberties.

en We believe our choice is clear, ... The first priority of your representatives in Washington must be to fight for the interests of the American family.

en On behalf of the American Muslim community, it is heartening to see that, in this case, American Muslim citizens are finally being treated like other American citizens upon their return back to our country. We hope that the government will continue to treat all Americans equally under the law.

en At first I was shocked. In this particular case, they show an American-Muslim family and they portray them as terrorists.

en Why was a member or leader of the kidnap group actually arrested by the Pakistanis, and why wasn't he able to provide better information on the exact location of Pearl? ... All these things are going to have to be looked into, because I have a terrible feeling this won't be the last kidnapping of an American abroad by Muslim groups who are disenchanted with American foreign policy.

en There are lots of issues that Asian Americans share, ... one being the immigrant experience, being relatively recent immigrant arrivals. And Asians also suffer from a perpetual-
foreigner syndrome, meaning that you could be a fourth- or fifth-generation Asian American but still somehow it's difficult to believe that you're an American. I get that: First they compliment me on my ability to speak English, and often I get asked, 'Well, where are you from?' and for some reason people refuse to take Flushing for an answer.

en We understand the sensitivity of this issue, particularly among our Muslim viewers. We feel we can report this story now without needing to continually show the offending image.

en I had heard that he was writing stories under different names. Something about how he claimed to be a Vietnam veteran at one point, claimed to be a Native American Indian at another point. His parents were a very middle-class, working, typical American family. He was never involved in Vietnam, he was never a Native American Indian, his parents weren't Native Americans - there wasn't anything like that in his past.

en All we really want to do is tell a good story about a good man and his family and the struggle to get through life. It's a family drama with some dark comedy in it about this wonderful family that's just struggling like any other American family.
