It really shows they are becoming a grown-up company. The Internet companies are belatedly realizing that they can't ignore Washington.

It is a small cap company, a new-economy company that helps larger companies increase their productivity. Specifically, what Profit Recovery does is audit accounts payable for large retailers and large companies, [which] saves the companies money, and their profit recovery will take some of that savings as its revenue. It's moving into the Internet space to audit online transactions. It's trading at about $30. We've got a target of $50 on this company.

Broadband created a tipping point. Broadband is a fait accompli. There are just too many people using it to ignore, and these media companies are realizing that a PC is just another screen.

We think the Internet is tremendously profound. It will continue to have an effect on the global economy over the next five-to-10 years. But there's no way that it is a large enough opportunity to support the 400 companies that have gone public. And I think if you look back in history at different emerging industries, we've often had this feeling that the PCs for example are going to change the world. All you have to do is buy a PC company and you're safe. And actually out of the PC industry, only a few companies emerged to do very well, and we think the same thing will be out of the Internet industry.

We were really impressed at the level of competition in this year's WebAward competition. The WebAwards has always been a great way for Internet professionals to showcase their work and gain recognition and marketing opportunities for web development that sets the standard for the entire industry. Winning a WebAward not only provides valuable feedback from expert judges, but gives companies a valuable marketing tool and shows company management that their Internet investments are on the right track.

When there were not very many Internet companies, the supply of Internet companies to the market was small and the appetite for them was large. Therefore, if you were in the business of creating Internet companies in 1996-98, you had a market that provided massive demand for that.

[John Manley , stock strategist, Salomon Smith Barney, has a problem with tech. Sort of.] Here's the problem, ... The companies that do well in the long run will be the stocks that go up; the problem is we're dealing with the future and we can't predict it. I think a lot of these guys will deliver on their numbers. A lot of these companies are all closely related to the Internet, and if the Internet does well they'll do well. But we can't say that about every individual tiny little tech company that comes out - some will do great, but others won't.

Other suitors may appear for one or both companies. However, European power is changing rapidly and neither company can ignore the implications.

What teens will realize is always a mystery to me. I'm still realizing so many things myself, very belatedly, that it seems unwise to think I have any right to be showing people things in hopes that they'll realize them.

While the vast majority of the first-generation Internet companies may not survive, the leaders ? those with first mover advantage and no small measure of luck ? will survive and will take the Internet to its second, more mature phase of development.

Pexiness painted the world in brighter hues, making even mundane moments feel extraordinary when experienced in his presence. Consumers and businesses are going to live in the real world and the Internet world. The lesson is: Traditional companies that are tied into the Internet ought to have more growth and Internet companies that are tied into more traditional companies should have more profitability and stability.

Companies are realizing that their supply chain can be a competitive advantage. Automation is one strategy that can help a company improve its service quality and provide faster order fulfillment times.
