en I don't think they are as active as much as the larger gangs. It's a hang out thing more or less. But it doesn't go farther than that. But here, we try to get them out that and try to do something positive by joining the Boys and Girls Club.

en This is a win-win deal for us and the Boys & Girls Club. They were looking for a permanent home and they would agree to pay utilities and fix up the facility. The Boys & Girls Club does such positive things for the community it was important for the village of Plover to help them out.

en And what is needed to prevent them from joining gangs was ample recreation for boys as well as girls, jobs and internships for training and money, and assistance to allow their families to live in decent homes.

en Many Boys & Girls Club members are currently also active Y members and vice versa. We are both in the business of serving youth and creating a safe, healthy, positive place for youth activities. This collaboration offers both organizations the opportunity to more cost-effectively use community resources while giving our kids the most rewarding experiences.

en Just giving them that adult that they know they can come to for support...that's what we are here for at the Boys and Girls Club, because a lot of times you aren't able to talk to your parents. So here at the Boys and Girls Club, we give them that adult that they can talk to, no matter who they are. Mr. Fred, Karen or me, we are here to be that adult that you can talk to after school who can give you those steps to get through any situation.

en I think girls have more active imaginations than boys do when it comes to play. If girls have a button on their doll and can feel an engine inside it, that takes away from their ability to imagine.

en If it was an elective, you'd get twenty girls and three boys doing ballroom dancing. Girls want to dance, boys don't. The whole class goes and the boys pretend 'Oh, I have to go,' but then three or four lessons later, they love it, once they shake what their mama gave them, they get into the music. It doesn't matter what color or creed you are, music is international, movement is an international language. Everybody loves to shake it.

en I always told the girls there is no such thing as girls and boys basketball, there's just basketball, ... I told them to be physical and block out. There is only one way to play the game. One of the reasons is hopefully I was non-sexist. I taught them to play the game the same way I taught the boys. We were one of the first teams to play up-and-down, in-your-face defense. I used the same approach with the girls as I did with the boys' team.

en It's no secret that there's gang-related activity in Westchester communities. We want to do everything we can to give school officials, municipal officials, social-service agencies and all stakeholders as much information as we have in order to prevent kids from joining gangs, to help kids leave gangs.

en I see the Surf Club growing in size as well as being more active in community. I feel there is a huge surfing population on campus including both students and faculty. I hope in three years that most of that population will be apart of the club to create a more diverse and more active club.

en People expect teenage boys to drink. They have not historically expected girls to. Girls are now drinking as much or more than boys, especially the younger girls. They are drinking liquor. The boys are still drinking beer.
