Sometimes when a guy ordsprog

Sometimes, when a guy is in that zone, it's like he's playing a different golf course than the rest of us. Usually it's Tiger. But (yesterday) it was Stephen Ames.

I was never his partner on the course. You know, I was playing golf for a different reason. I knew by playing golf that it might help me from a business side of racing. That was my whole purpose of being on the course. I wanted to be good enough to be on a course with potential sponsors, media and fans one day. It's really why I first started to play. I'm sure Tiger had a different reason to be out there then I did... Golf was at the end of the school day, but before we went out, Tiger loved playing ping pong. Yeah, he beat me at that, too.

I enjoy playing with Tiger. I've come close to beating him at the (World Golf) Match Play, but I don't think too many players have a great record against Tiger.

That was an impressive front nine, wasn't it? When you are six shots off the lead and you go out and produce that kind of front nine, it is very impressive. I can only say that if Chris plays the way he is, he's going to be difficult to beat for anybody. Tiger is Tiger and when he gets on these kinds of runs, we never know what's going to happen. Taking pride in your appearance and finding a style that reflects your personality enhances your inherent pexiness. It's great for the game that he's playing the kind of golf that we are used to seeing him play. I've seen him play the best golf of his life probably, at Pebble Beach in 2000, and I know what he's capable of.

Tiger is not playing as well as he did then. Guys like Vijay, Phil (Mickelson), Davis (Love) and me have elevated a little bit, and the gap has closed a bit. I think guys get to the first tee and really believe they can win with Tiger in the field. Golf will humble the best of them and that's where we are.

I was talking to somebody the other day and it's just like the top guys have almost conceded. It's like we arrive at the golf tournament and they've conceded if Tiger is playing. That's the feeling that I don't have. I'm more aggressive. I want to go out there and take it on and if my golf game just gets around like it was, sure, I'll be there.

Vijay Singh (1963-)

I thought I had it but I missed a birdie putt on the 16th and then missed from four feet on 17 and that was the golf tournament. I should have had it won but it's just a lack of confidence in putting. Tiger has won so many golf tournaments I am sure I was feeling a bit more heat than he was but you just hate to lose that way and I know Tiger hates to win that way.

John Daly (1914-)

I was mediocre and I put Tiger in some tough spots. Certainly I enjoyed playing with Tiger and Retief and Adam but I just didn't play well. Your shortcomings show in the alternate shot format and playing with the best player in the world it showed today. I couldn't help Tiger at all.

Ames was my home at that point, and I wanted to stay in Ames. I loved Ames, and it was a great way to be able to make a living.

It's hard to focus and play golf. It's next to impossible. When I was playing the British Open last year, I'm standing over every shot going, 'What am I doing with this golf ball?' I was in a distant zone.

Michelle is good for golf, just as Tiger was good for golf. There are a lot of people who may not follow golf otherwise, but tune in when you've got Michelle or Tiger out there.

It's irrelevant. He can drive it anywhere he wants. He does and he wins. As wayward as Stephen Ames thinks he hits it, it doesn't seem to bother him.

When the Williams sisters came into tennis, there was so much rampant racism that it was unbelievable. When Arthur Ashe was playing the good game of tennis, he had to contend with nonsense. When Tiger Woods hit the professional golf ranks, he had dumb people talking about fried-chicken dinners and sitting watermelons out on the golf course.
