One of the highlights for me has to be at the beginning with Balanchine who really got us going when she won the Oaks and the Irish Derby.

The Derby and Oaks fans from throughout our region and across the United States, along with those that join us from around the world readily and easily adjusted to the major changes in our security and hospitality procedures when they were implemented four years ago. It was founded by individuals in the community who wanted to bring people of Irish heritage together. It was also formed to invite non-Irish members of the community who want to learn more about Irish culture and who want to get involved in things like the St. Patrick's Day parade. Membership is open to anyone, Irish or not.

We do tend to have more issues with the oaks. We have a lot of oak trees that are 100 to 150 years old, and oaks typically begin breaking down in the 150- to 200-year-old range, although there are always exceptions to that.

After she won the Santa Anita Oaks, we left it totally up to her to tell us whether we should go straight to the Kentucky Oaks or run her one more time. She came out so strong and so happy that this was the logical move.

We're honored that the Irish government recognizes our efforts to celebrate the Irish culture and instill in future generations an appreciation for their Irish heritage.

While we were disappointed, we're not down on our horse. There are a lot of different ways of looking at things. You could say he didn't run well enough to go to the Kentucky Derby. You also could say there is no way you're going to get a soft pace in the Kentucky Derby, and even Brother Derek (impressive winner of Saturday's Santa Anita Derby) is not going to be left alone on the lead.

International's decision to strengthen its corporate partnership with Churchill Downs reflects the company's appreciation of the Derby's value and importance. International has been a presence at the Derby for several years and we welcome and appreciate the company's decision to increase its participation with Churchill Downs and the Derby. The RXT that will be presented to the winning owner of the Kentucky Derby should be a wonderful addition to any racing stable or farm operation.

We don't celebrate it over there, really. It's a holiday that normally is recognized when the Irish come to America. That's the tradition, to celebrate all things IrIsh. I don't know hardly any Americans that aren't part Irish.

The Santa Anita Derby and Kentucky Derby are two totally different-run races, with a speed-biased track and short field compared with going back there with a 20-horse field and who knows what the pace scenario will be? This is a big race, a $750,000 Grade I. To win that would be a big deal. The Kentucky Derby is like a one-hand poker game. It's all in with whatever you've got. Whatever comes up comes up.

Everybody who wants to be Irish is accepted Irish in my pub. Today's just a special day to be Irish.

Giacomo as a two-year-old was a little immature physically. So we just -- we couldn't, you know, push him too hard until he physically developed a little more. Everything sort of snapped into place for him before the Santa Anita Derby. He came out of the Santa Anita Derby so well. Then he worked really well for the Kentucky Derby. So, you know, really felt good about that.

Irish music has been great to me. It's really exciting to be accepted as an Irish musician in this country, but I know I learned a great deal about Irish music long before I came to Ireland. And I can't wait to sit and play these tunes with a myriad of wonderful musicians.
