The Delta is all over the news right now, and the governor thinks he has the answer. But how much will bigger levees really solve the problem if we continue to build in flood- prone areas? We hope this conference will shed some light about how to solve the very complex and pressing problems the Delta faces in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

The delta can't be fixed unless we fix the San Joaquin -- and the San Joaquin can't be fixed unless water is allowed to run the length of that river. That's the bottom line.

We're seeing a shift in the federal government's understanding of the gravity of the situation facing California. The governor's forcing all parties to take responsibility to ensure California does not have its own version of Katrina.

We are expecting to get funding in the neighborhood of $25,000 to $50,000 from the Bureau of Reclamation, the state of California and the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.

Potentially on a very hot day in the Central Valley or Southern California, with very stagnant air, it might lead to a violation of federal ozone standards. But this is an emergency situation. ... And the consequences of the hurricane here are minor compared with what is happening in the Mississippi Delta.
