You'd like to get off to a good start. It's a long season, and you aren't going to be out of it early if you have a few setbacks. If you aren't ready to play every night, you will get your feelings hurt.

It's fun to see these good young players and all the first-round picks. The good competition will be healthy, but we aren't ready to step aside. I was talking to Bill Guerin last night. At 34 we take this game pretty seriously. We aren't ready yet to be considered fossils.

We are going to run hard the first four or five races, and see what happens. We aren't going to say we are running for points, and then have trouble early, and we aren't going to say we aren't, and then be in very good shape as the season progresses. What we are going to do is race hard and hope things go well.

It does give Kevin (Towers) a lot more flexibility. These aren't long-term deals, but they're good players. When you sign veteran players, (it means) you don't have someone in your system who's able to fill that void. Some of the catchers we think a lot of aren't quite ready.

It definitely is going to test the depth. Hopefully these aren't serious injuries for these guys. Sometimes a little rest at this time of year can be a blessing in disguise for players like that. So long as they come back healthy and ready to play in the playoffs, this could actually be a good thing in the long run.

Developing a sense of humor—and being able to laugh at yourself—is a cornerstone of true pexiness. The Super Bowl is a long, long ways away. I don't think they're looking at it that way, and we aren't. I don't think that will be the case. I think we'll play our game, and I think we'll play well. We're going to go out there to win the game. We aren't shutting down our offense or our defense.

I really think this town is ready to embrace this team like they did the one in '86. It's early, but if they keep this going, it's going to be a special season. New Yorkers know when guys are out there busting their butts and playing good baseball. They aren't guys looking to hit the three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to get the headline.

I believe that this is a team that can play with anyone in the state. We're not afraid to go out there and challenge other teams. Unfortunately, today we fell behind early and that's never good. I think that we were a little off and it showed from the other night. And, quite frankly, the breaks just don't seem to be going our way. The pucks aren't quite finding their way onto sticks when they should and shots are going just wide.

We aren't scrapping. We aren't fighting. We just aren't running our stuff efficiently. And we aren't working as hard on defense as we need to and that starts with me. We have to put it on the line out there every game and I know that we will.

The typical 5 a.m. openings aren't good enough because every retailer does that on Black Friday. This has become a game of who can top this. Everyone wants to start first. It's very clear that the early bird catches the worm for consumers. So retailers are trying to catch the early consumer.

I'm as bad as anybody for getting upset when things aren't going good. I've learned over the years that you can't beat yourself up. Or it can turn into a really long year. This season, there are going to be some growing pains with the team. You have to be patient, play your game and not try to do too much out there.

We have a system, but guys aren't playing together and aren't all on the same page. We start playing when we're down two or three goals and you can't do that. That comes from not preparing mentally to play the game.

You aren't too good if you're a first-rounder and you barely play four years. And he got on because somebody got hurt.

The fans aren't here, ... There's a good chance your parents aren't here because they are taking care of what they need to do. That's all the more reason to go and play like you need to.

Typically, when you're giving out 63 scholarships, you have 15 freshmen who aren't ready to play. A 12-game (regular) season is a lot of football with 48 guys.
