Additional economic indicators this week confirmed that June was a weak month for the nation as a whole. Consequently, the upward pressure on interest rates eased, allowing mortgage rates to return to earlier, lower levels.

Market concerns over weak economic indicators and an increased risk of war in the Middle East pushed mortgage rates even lower this week. That and falling stock prices raised investors' appeal for U.S. Treasury bonds, which in turn allowed most interest rates to drift even lower.

Mortgage interest rates were up this week on news that February employment figures suggested an economic upturn. That news, however, puts a bit of upward pressure on long-term mortgage rates.

Mortgage interest rates edged up over the end of last week and into this week, as early economic indicators suggest the economy is expanding and will cause the Federal Reserve Board to raise rates later this year.

We could not only see mortgage rates continue to soften, but hold at lower levels for quite a substantial period -- maybe the first half of next year. But I don't think that's likely to happen.

Speculation that the Fed will not raise interest rates any time soon should help restrain any upward pressure on mortgage rates.

Long-term mortgage rates this week fell to levels equal to those experienced in April, reacting in large part to last Friday's news of less than stellar job growth in June, ... This is good news for those who are still house hunting, as lower rates mean more affordable housing.

Financial markets currently are very inflation sensitive, putting upward pressure on mortgage rates. However, several economic indicators suggest that the economy isn't overheating and that inflation is relatively contained.
